Two alumnae recognised as “Rising Stars of 2017” by The Guardian

The Guardian has recently revealed its list of ten Rising Stars of 2017, showcasing people to “look out for” in the coming year. The ten chosen stars work in various areas ranging from cookery to writing and singing to campaigning.

Lolly Adefope, upcoming comedian and 2012 Loughborough English graduate, has been included on the list. In an interview for The Guardian, it is clear that Lolly not only showcases her own persona when performing, but also impersonates other characters to push the boundaries on stage.

Having performed her own comedy show ‘Lolly’, she will take to the stage again with her upcoming show ‘Lolly2’ at the Soho Theatre in mid-January. She has also been seen recently on the BBC show QI, as well as having a regular role in the TV sitcom Rovers.

She may be the only comedian on the list by The Guardian, but she certainly isn’t the only Loughborough alumna.

Lopè Ariyo, 2016 Loughborough Maths graduate and food blogger, chef and now author, is also on the list and is certainly one to watch. Whilst completing her studies, Lopè entered a competition to find someone who would “break an African cuisine into the home kitchens of the UK”, held by Red magazine and HarperCollins, winning herself a book deal.

Her cookbook, Hibiscus, is currently available for pre-order online and will contain 100 recipes. Her Guardian feature details her amazing journey from applying to the competition to the writing of the book, as well as sharing the rising popularity of her food amongst friends and traditional family members. Lopè’s recipes seek to combine the traditional tastes and foods of Nigeria with European twists, bringing African cuisine to the forefront of British life. Hibiscus will be available to purchase from June 2017.

We would like to wish Lolly and Lopè good luck in their current endeavours and congratulate them on being recognised nationally as two of The Guardian’s ten “Rising Stars of 2017”.
