Entrepreneurial alumnus receives prestigious British Council Award

Alumnus Dr Terence Yeo has won the British Council Alumni Award for entrepreneurship in the United States.

The Entrepreneurial Award recognises UK alumni who are active in initiating or contributing to innovative new business opportunities that have the potential for strong growth.

Dr Yeo set up his own business, Fusion Optix that is now a globally successful LED lighting technology company based in Boston, USA.

Fusion Optix has been granted more than 50 patents for its innovations and was recently named as one of 100 most innovative companies in the Americas. It was also listed on the 2012 Inc. 5000 as one of the fastest growing manufacturing companies in the USA.

Dr Yeo studied for a degree in Electronic Engineering and Physics at Loughborough from 1986 until 1990 followed by a PhD in Physics where he focused on optics, studying under Professor Nick Phillips. He received scholarships from Nortel Networks and the Science and Engineering Research Council. Dr Yeo received his Doctorate in 1993, before undertaking his MBA at Cambridge.

Speaking of his time at Loughborough Dr Yeo said, “Loughborough was a tremendous environment for me in which to learn, grow and explore my potential. Without doubt it gave me an education and a core skillset that I use every day still. More than anything though it was simply a great place to be for that period in my life.”

Former lecturers in The Department of Physics were delighted to hear about Dr Yeo’s award. Dr John Samson Senior Lecturer in Physics said of the announcement:

"Terence had the rare distinction of completing his PhD studies in less than three years. I remember him as a bright, well-motivated and enterprising student and it is no surprise that he has been able to successfully build on his skills and education.”

The award for entrepreneurship is one of a number of presented annually. The British Council Alumni Awards celebrate the exceptional achievements of alumni who have studied in the UK in the last 15 years and showcase the impact and value of a UK education.

Loughborough University congratulates Dr Terence Yeo on his outstanding achievements.
