Subject: Draft Module Specification for LUSI

Origin: LUSI Programmes and Modules Working Group

A Working Group of the LUSI Programmes and Modules Team, comprising Robert Bowyer, Chris Spendlove, Lynn Dutton and Jennie Elliott, has considered revisions to the Module Specification as part of the development of the new LUSI student information system. A draft Module Specification for LUSI was presented to the Programme Development and Quality Team and subsequently revised to take into account the Team’s comments and those of two other Departmental Administrators.

The attached revised draft Module Specification for LUSI is now presented to Curriculum Sub-Committee for its consideration. Additions/changes to the existing CIS Module Specification have been highlighted. The revisions are intended to:

overcome limitations of the existing CIS Module Specification
parametrize more elements of the Module Specification to enhance searching possibilities for quantifiable purposes
incorporate automatic input of data where possible (which, as well as assisting Departments, will help to avoid conflicting material in Module Specifications, such as weighting and hours of student effort)
allow as far as possible for the information in Module Specifications to be operationalised, particularly for examination purposes
include standard text automatically where this is appropriate (e.g. under Aims/ILOs), as an aid to Departments and also to ensure that essential information is not omitted.

The CIS keyword field has been excluded as it was considered that the keywords selected for modules were very often inappropriate as search words. It is intended that word searches across all text fields will be possible under LUSI.
