Subject:    Rescinding Awards

Origin:      Mr C Spendlove, Student Office (email: 11 May 2006)

Jennie,

On normal PGT programmes, if a student who has been awarded a PGCert wishes
to upgrade to a PGDip or MSc, the original award is deleted from their
record and they continue with the same ID number against which the new award
is made at some point in the future. We ask the students to return their
original cert, but I expect that in some cases we don't get it back. The
student record system will only show that they hold the higher
qualification. In this case, the student might end up with MSc but would no
longer hold PGCE

Although, in my opinion, it is completely wrong in principle, double
counting is of course not unheard of. For example, when we were validating
DipHE's in Peterborough, the students were awarded a Loughborough branded
DipHE and then after a year's top-up here, were awarded a Loughborough
degree.

I must say that I am not sure how we are going to map 120 credits for a PGCE
onto a PGDip. what will the additional requirements be?

Cheers,
Chris
