Regulations for the Postgraduate Programme in Integrated Research Studies

 

These Regulations refer to the conduct of the curriculum-based component of the New Route PhD.  The Regulations apply in the Session 2005-2006 but are subject to change from time to time.  Notice of change will be given in subsequent editions of these Regulations.  Students should enquire as to the up-to-date position when they need to know this.

 

These Regulations are to be read in conjunction with the Regulations for the New Route PhD Degree of Doctor of Philosophy and Regulation XXI.

 

 

1.      Structure

 

1.1.  All students who are registered on the New Route PhD programme are required to undertake the curriculum-based component of the programme which leads to the award of a Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip), PG Dip with distinction, a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) or a PG Cert with distinction, in Integrated Research Studies. 

 

1.2.  The PG Diploma programme will normally be completed within the first two years of registration on the New Route PhD.

 

1.3.   New Route PhD students who already possess an appropriate Masters Degree or other relevant experience may be granted exemption from undertaking specific modules, up to a total modular weight of 30, at the discretion of the Programme Director.

 

1.4    All candidates shall register at the beginning of their programme and subsequently at the beginning of each academic year for the modules which they are taking in that year, subject to their satisfactory progress in research and the extension of their registration for the New Route PhD in accordance with paragraph 4.4 of the Regulations for Higher Degrees by Research.

 

 

2.      Content

 

2.1    There are several distinct modular pathways to the PG Diploma in Integrated Research Studies.  Each New Route PhD student must follow the pathway appropriate to the department in which they are registered.

 

Computer Science Pathway

Modules to total 70 credits from the following:

 

a)     Any advanced level modules from the Department of Computer Science portfolio of MSc and MComp programmes, subject to the approval of the Programme Director.

 

b)     Any advanced level modules offered by other departments, subject to the agreement of the departments concerned and the approval of the Programme Director.

 

YEAR 2 Semester 1

Compulsory Module

EITHER

CGP003         Learning and Teaching Skills for Research Students 2                           10

OR

CGP004         Continuing Professional Development for Research Students               10

 

 

Year 2 Semester 1

Optional Modules

Modules totalling 20 credits from the lists above (must not have been taken in Year 1).

 

3.      Assessment

 

3.1.      Each module in the curriculum-based component of the New Route PhD programme shall be assessed and credit awarded in accordance with the procedures set out in Regulation XXI.

 

3.2        Candidates who accumulate 120 credits shall be eligible for the award of PG Diploma in Integrated Research Studies.  Candidates who do not meet the requirements for the award of PG Diploma but who accumulate at least 60 credits shall be eligible for the award of PG Certificate in Integrated Research Studies.

 

3.3    Eligibility for the award of distinction in the PG Diploma award will be in accordance with Regulation XXI.

 

3.4.   Provision will be made in accordance with Regulation XXI for candidates who have the right of re-assessment to be reassessed in the University's Special Assessment Period.

 

3.5.   Progress on the New Route PhD programme following completion of the curriculum-based element will be determined in accordance with paragraph 15 the Regulations for the New Route PhD.
