Green Gown awards

On the 16th June 2010 the It’s Better OFF team of Jo Hasbury, Greg Watts and Jenny Turner were accompanied by Shirley Pearce (Vice Chancellor) Dr Anne Mumford (Director of Change Projects) Andrew Burgess (Director of Facilities Management) Dennis Loveday and Jackie Glass (Academics in the Sustainability Field) and Environmental Champions Rob Pearce and Alison Smith, to the Sector recognised Green Gown awards.

It‘s Better OFF to be Highly Commended.

The winners of the annual Green Gown Awards, established to find the UK’s most sustainable universities and colleges, were announced at a prestigious gala banquet held at the Swan at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, London on 16 June 2010.

In their sixth year, the Green Gown Awards recognise exceptional initiatives being taken by higher and further education institutions in order to become more sustainable. The scheme has a variety of categories in which universities and colleges can illustrate their achievements, in both academia and estates management.

The winning entries were drawn from 191 applications, representing nearly 110 colleges and universities from across the UK. Each had to undergo a rigorous assessment process involving 44 expert judges from a range of relevant organisations including the Carbon Trust, The Association of College & University Business Officers (CUBO) and The Skills Funding Agency (SFA).

From the Sustainability Team at Loughborough University submitting their initial application in February this year to being shortlisted and submitting the stage 2 applications in May, the final judging couldn’t come soon enough. With all the results top secret till the night, finding out that the ‘It’s Better OFF’ campaign launched in February 2009 had been awarded Highly Commended by the Judges was a big surprise.

The judges said…

They felt this project demonstrated a very good example of an awareness campaign. Loughborough University offered a cost effective initiative that was highly transferable amongst the sector.
