Our School is one of the largest of its type in the UK with over 500 undergraduate and 150 postgraduate students, 36 full-time academic staff and 50 support staff. The Engineering Council UK (ECUK) accredits all of the courses offered by the School. For our MEng courses this leads to Chartered Engineer status, and for our BEng courses to becoming an Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer after further study.

European and UK Government agencies, as well as industry, sponsor a wide range of projects in the School, in areas including; communications and signal processing, systems engineering, microelectronics, optical electronics, control systems, electrical power and renewable energy systems.

Some of our students also find positions with finance houses or management consultants such as Goldman Sachs and PA Consulting. 97% of our 2015 graduates were in work or further study within 6 months of graduation with an average starting salary of £27,000
We are the UK’s number one university for engineering placements, with over 30% more students on year-long placements than any other university (2015/16 HESA UG Student Record).
All of our undergraduate courses in electronic, electrical and systems engineering provide the option of a paid year working in industry. The School’s close links with industrial partners means we are able to provide our students with considerable help in sourcing and securing their placement.
The year in industry is optional but it is strongly encouraged because of the many benefits it can provide. Placement students earn a salary, typically over £16,500 per annum, and many are offered a permanent job with their host company when they graduate.
Recent companies who have employed our placement students include Airbus UK, BAE Systems, Bentley Motors, EDF, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Intel, Jaguar Land Rover, JCB, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, National Grid and Rolls-Royce.
The School has well equipped teaching areas, testing facilities and workshops. The networked IT infrastructure is highly developed, providing industry-standard software packages.
STEMLab is a £17 million investment in new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and part of a wider £25 million investment in our campus which includes an adjacent student learning and teaching hub.
STEMLab will include a suite of laboratories for practical work in Bioengineering, allowing students crucial opportunities to gain applied experience with biological samples in a safe and modern environment.
Our MEng courses are designed to be compatible with the longer courses that are standard in many European universities so International Exchange schemes, including ERASMUS, present opportunities for study abroad.
In particular the UNITECH scheme allows students on MEng courses to combine study in a top European institution with a work placement at a large multinational engineering company, and leads to a Diploma in International Studies (DIntS).
Sponsorship, scholarships and bursaries
We broker a range of sponsored places from leading companies such as BAE Systems, Frazer-Nash Consultancy and Jaguar Land Rover. We are also a member of the IET's Power Academy, an engineering scholarship fund supporting undergraduate students in electrical and power engineering at leading UK universities.
Students studying any of the School's degree courses and intending to take up a career in the Armed Forces or Civil Service may be eligible for financial support under the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology has its own sponsorship schemes, and is also able to supply a list of companies offering sponsorship.
The School and the University offer a number of annual scholarship and bursary schemes. These may be awarded according to academic achievement or fee status, or for those with outstanding abilities in sport or music.
