Chemistry with an International Foundation Year

Special emphasis is placed on subject-specific tuition to prepare students for their chosen degree course, as well as developing the study skills needed for success in an independent learning environment.

Chemistry with an International Foundation Year enables entry on to any of the following Chemistry courses offered by Loughborough University:


During the year you will undertake core modules in English, Chemistry and Mathematics, as well as options from other subject areas, including Physics and Sport Science.

Facilities

The Department is well-equipped for the study of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry with a range of specialist equipment including 400 MHz, 500 MHz and solid-state NMR spectrometers, single crystal and powder X-ray diffractometers, gas and liquid chromatographs, and ion-mobility spectrometers.

STEMLab

STEMLab is a £17 million investment in new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. It is part of a wider £25 million investment in the West Park of our campus which includes the adjacent student learning and teaching hub.

Opening this year, STEMLab contains new engineering, physics, chemistry, materials and bio laboratories forming a truly cutting-edge learning facility.

This outstanding new space allows us to offer new ways to learn and collaborate – such as the ‘Ideas Factory’ that provides space for cross-disciplinary collaboration. STEMLab boasts a range of high-quality modern facilities, including, for example, a ‘drop-in’ engineering workshop alongside teaching laboratories across STEM subjects, workshops, computer-aided design and rapid prototyping facilities, a design studio and informal leaning spaces.

These enhanced facilities further increase our ability to train and develop skilled graduates that are targeted by major employers from across the world.

As a student on the International Foundation Programme you will receive high quality teaching from renowned Loughborough University academics, and be supported throughout your studies by an academic tutor.

Language modules will build your confidence with the English language.

In addition, you will benefit from our University Library, IT services, Mathematics Learning Support Centre and wide range of health and welfare services, including tailored support for international students.

Please note: Students who have already met the University department’s required level of English with a local qualification (such as WAEC) may be exempt from taking English Language modules as part of the foundation year, pending confirmation from their department. They would instead choose from a list of other available academic modules.


Assessment

Modules are assessed by a combination of written exams and / or coursework assignments. Some modules are continually assessed throughout the year.

Typical coursework assignments include: lab reports, essays, poster presentations, assessed tutorials, workshops, peer review (review fellow students’ performance) and dissertations.

It is expected that for every hour you are in a structured class, you should spend two hours of your own time researching, writing up, learning work or doing set questions etc.

Selection

Applicants are usually selected solely on the basis of their UCAS application.  If applicants are made an offer of a place, they will be invited to visit the department giving them the opportunity to meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at Loughborough.
