Why did you choose Loughborough University?

Loughborough has one of the best reputations in the country for textiles and has amazing connections within the global industry. This along with the vast amount of facilities housed in the School of the Arts provides students with great opportunities for developing their work to a professional standard.

One of the main factors behind my decision to study textiles was the high quality of work at Loughborough degree shows and the enthusiasm of existing students. After studying the foundation course at Loughborough I couldn’t imagine any other University I would rather continue my studies at.

What attracted you to the University in the first place?

During my first year at Loughborough I studied the Art and Design Foundation Course. I loved the atmosphere on campus and the facilities at the School of the Arts. Being aware of the opportunity to progress to undergraduate study secured my decision to stay at Loughborough.

What do you enjoy about your course?

I enjoy having my own studio space where I can be in control of my own work and learning. The course is very fast-paced and you are constantly producing work, learning new things and preparing for work in industry.

One of the main things I enjoy about studying textiles is the social aspect. Being in the studio every day, you get to know everyone really well and share ideas to help each other.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

All of my tutors since being at Loughborough University have been highly supportive and influential. I can always go and ask for help whenever I need it, whether during group tutorials or individually. There are many technical tutors available to help, too.

Do you have a particularly favourite project/module on your course? Why did you enjoy it?

During first year I really enjoyed being able to explore the three different pathway options: print, multimedia and weave. This was useful as I gained a good understanding of each and it led me to choose weave as my specialism.

What kind of support have you had in the department and from the University?

The tutors are always supportive in helping with practical work. You are also assigned a personal tutor in first year, to support you with any problems or difficulties you encounter.

Have you completed a placement whilst at University?

I plan to gain some work experience during the summer break between second and third year. I believe it will be highly beneficial to gain an understanding of success in the industry. Learning new skills on a work placement will also help me to progress during third year.

What do you hope to do when you graduate, and how will your Loughborough degree support this?

There are a vast amount of job prospects for someone studying a textiles degree. I am not sure what I would like to do yet, but I know I will have a lot of support from the careers department and my tutors.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

You need to be prepared to work hard but equally to have a lot of fun! You will learn a lot of new things and probably do things you never thought about before. First year especially is there for you to explore everything that interests you about textiles and will lead you into doing something you really enjoy. Be open to everything and anything.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

The social atmosphere at Loughborough is great. It is known to have one of the best Student Unions in the country and there is something for everyone to get involved in.

Joining Loughborough students’ dance club has been one of the best things I have done at University. Alongside the great social aspect, dance has helped me to manage my time effectively and has given me something else to focus on besides my studies.

What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?

I like the fact that Loughborough has a great reputation as a University. There is always something to get involved in on campus, which has a friendly and safe atmosphere everywhere you go.

Has Loughborough inspired you?

I have been inspired by the successes of past students and will be extremely proud to say I have studied at Loughborough University.
