Why did you choose Loughborough University?
The fantastic opportunities at Loughborough are what sold the university to me. You have the option to complete a placement year as part of the course and the department has strong links to the industry. The facilities available are also great.
What attracted you to the University in the first place?
I love that Loughborough is a campus based university – everything is so close. The textiles department had the largest print room compared to other universities I looked at and having personal workstations in the studio allows flexible working time. I find one-on-one contact time with tutors inspiring and very helpful with improving the quality of my work.
What do you enjoy about your course?
Everything – I love receiving a brief and going out to research my theme, then creating drawings and designs. The ability to express original creativity through design is something that I am passionate about.
What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?
The quality of teaching is second to none. I have found the teaching in the second year to be much more personal due to smaller teaching groups, which has really benefitted my knowledge and understanding.
Do you have a particularly favourite project/module on your course?
The H&M module in second year has been my favourite so far. Interaction and mentoring with an external company appeals to me and the module allowed me to research the latest trends whilst creating my own designs to complement them. The thrill of having H&M come into the University to review, critique and select possible internship candidates was exciting.
What kind of support have you had in the department and from the University?
Some of the support I have received includes one-on-one tutorials, inspiration from visiting the third year studios and peer mentoring for 1st year students.
What are some of the exciting/different things you can do on your course?
There are lots of internship opportunities within the industry where you can experience working in a variety of multidisciplinary companies, which have the potential to open up career prospects. Studying abroad via Erasmus and spending a semester abroad in another university are also exciting possibilities on the course.
Have you completed a placement whilst at University?
I’m hopeful that I will have the opportunity to complete a placement year in industry during my third year. I hope to gain professional experience in print design within interior or fashion. Visual merchandising and buying are two disciplines that I will hopefully be exposed to.
What do you hope to do when you graduate, and how will your Loughborough degree support this?
I hope to become a print designer in interior or fashion. My degree has given me lots of new skills and opportunities to improve my knowledge within the profession.
What would you say to someone considering your course?
Apply yourself to the course with an open mind as this will allow you to gain a range of academic and practical skills. I advise any aspiring student to engage with other students outside of the department through joining societies and sports teams.
How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?
There is such an extensive range of clubs and societies you can join at the University. Freshers’ fairs, taster sessions and trials are a great way to enhance your university experience and meet like-minded people who are up for a good time.
What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?
We have access to some of the best facilities in the country. I enjoy nights out at the Student Union and the great student vibe around campus.
Has Loughborough inspired you?
Loughborough has inspired me to stand out from the crowd and be the best that I can be.
