Year of Study

BSc (Hons)

Why did you choose Loughborough University?

I’m a huge sports fan and I’m fascinated by most aspects of it. My career goal is to work in professional football and I saw studying this degree as one of the best ways to achieve it. Loughborough is renowned as the best University for sport and that made my choice a very easy one.

What do you enjoy about your course?

I’m very fascinated by Sport Psychology so I find the relevant modules particularly interesting. I also love the flexibility of my course and that it allows me to take modules outside of the programme. For example I’ve decided to pick up French this year and I’m really enjoying it.

My favourite modules are Psychology and French – I’ve always been curious about how the mind works and the reasons why people behave the way they do; I thoroughly enjoy learning new languages and being able to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds. The lecturers are very engaging and make lectures especially interesting.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

All the lecturers are very knowledgeable about their subject, explain the content really well and are always ready to help. I’ve found all of them to be passionate about their area of expertise which makes lectures all the more interesting (most of the time!).

Have you had any support from the University?

Whatever support I’ve needed throughout my time at University – be that as an issue with my course or outside it – I’ve found the respective points of contact very supportive and often going out of their way to help. I was originally doing Sport Management, but switched to my current course when I felt that the modules weren’t suited to my interest, and the department were really supportive in my decision. It’s really good to know that there is always someone you can speak to who will try to help to the best of their ability in dealing with any issue you may have.

What are some of the different things you can do on your course?

My course includes both Science and Management modules, as well as an opportunity to take modules outside of the programme which adds variety. Some are taught differently to others and some modules include a practical element which mixes things up. I’ve found my course to be quite flexible in terms of module options, and that has allowed me to tailor it to my interests.

Are you planning to do a professional placement?

I’m currently looking for placements and work experience opportunities. I hope that it will give me a taste of working in the sport industry and allow me to expand my professional network.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

My goal is to become a Sport Psychologist and my degree is one of the best ways of getting there. After I graduate I intend to continue my studies and may need to do a conversion course to obtain the relevant accreditation. I will also be doing a Master’s – hopefully at Loughborough!

What would you say to someone considering your course?

I would strongly advise to do some research into modules that are part of the course and have a rough idea of which may interest you. Also, compare the module options of your potential courses and look into the number of compulsory and optional ones. Don’t be put off by the ones that sound less appealing – you’re pretty unlikely to love them all but do make sure that the course you choose links to something you want to be doing in the future.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

You will never find a lack of social activities at Loughborough. If you want to get involved in sport, you can do that at any level from recreational to elite to suit your abilities and preferences. Societies are a great way to socialise and meet people like-minded people with similar interests – there really is something for everyone! I’ve got involved with quite a few and I’m so glad I have – through societies I’ve met some of my best friends at University.

What do you enjoy about being a student here?

Loughborough is very unique in terms of what it offers; fantastic facilities, a strong reputation, the high quality of education and being consistently acknowledged as a University offering a great student experience are just some of the reasons why it’s one of the very best universities in the UK. I’m really enjoying the Loughborough experience and trying to make the most of the countless opportunities it provides.

Has Loughborough inspired you?

Being a student at Loughborough has made me realise that what may seem an impossible dream is achievable, no goal is too unrealistic and all the resources and support I need are provided to help me get there.
