Year of Study

MPhys (Hons)

Why did you choose Loughborough University?

I chose physics as it’s exciting - it is a subject that is ever advancing and the research possibilities are endless. At Loughborough lecturers are at the researching tip, creating an environment where you feel encouraged to learn and understand with them.

I was attracted to Loughborough mostly by the sporting fame and the high-ranking physics department. Many of the physics lecturers are involved in research which is a really inspiring environment to be in; this definitely encouraged me to come to Loughborough.

What do you enjoy about your course?

I enjoy the variety of the modules I study, with lecturers from all departments. Even from second year a choice is available for modules, and I picked a language (Spanish) – I love incorporating different interests into my course. As I progress in my degree the choice only widens, so I can discover where I see where my future in the realm of physics lies.

I just couldn’t do without the weekly lab sessions throughout my degree. I have an awesome relationship with my lab partner, and seeing physics in action, doing the experiments that prove the equations used in lectures, only adds a unique dimension to my studies.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

There is a high level of teaching quality, and I feel I have a strong say in how my course is run, too. Should I not feel that something has gone the best it could have, I have raised my opinion and felt that it has been heard.

What do you enjoy about studying Physics?

Physics is the most exciting degree, regardless, purely because of what it is. It can literally open every door, from pure research, engineering, finance and everything in-between. There are no limits when it comes to this degree – you can follow what you enjoy, what you find interesting, there is always a need for physics and the skills acquired to study it!

Do you plan to do any placements?

I am currently applying for a summer placement, where hopefully I’ll discover an area of application from my degree, to judge how much I like it! It should give me an experience of actual work, doing a job that matters – that is more than serving coffee!

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

At the moment I’m not sure, either research or a graduate job. Having had recent experience with the Careers and Employability Centre here I am not worried, there is such good support and guidance to lead you onto wherever you want to go.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

It may seem like hard work, and it is Physics! But it is an awesome degree, with such a wide variety of interesting topics and areas – you’ll have fun, learn a lot and meet some really cool people. Loughborough is an exciting place to study such a degree too, due to the huge choice of pastimes outside of your studies – there is something for everyone.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

There is a great social atmosphere at Loughborough – from departments to societies and sports clubs. The thing I enjoy the most about being a LU student is the variety of opportunities that are available to me. The executives truly have the students at the centre, if you are passionate about something then they will do their best to help you follow it.

Every physics social held has been a great opportunity to socialise with course mates from all years outside of the lecture hall. I have really enjoyed meeting students in other years, it is brilliant to ask questions and find out information about what they are up to, their plans and also about modules and lecturers.

I have joined 2 sports clubs each year at Loughborough, and I have loved every second of it. From the encouraging group training, cheering the team on race/tournament day and post competition socials it is, all-round, a true Loughborough experience – one like no other.

Has Loughborough inspired you?

The Physics department here have inspired me to know that research in physics really is possible. I am unsure about how I want to spend my future, but I know that at Loughborough, I will get the support I need to get wherever I want to go.
