Why did you choose Loughborough University?

I chose to study at Loughborough, as its location is ideal for studying astrophysics. There is little light pollution making it easier to see the stars when stargazing. The variety of sports facilities also made me choose Loughborough University. I was also impressed with the enthusiasm of the department staff, the location of the University and the University set up.

What do you enjoy about your course?

The vast amount of knowledge gained from each lecture is amazing. The course actively engages me and makes me think about the universe that we live in. The various subject areas link up in different ways allowing me to make connections between subjects. All of the knowledge gained is applied in the labs.

There is a lot of flexibility between the physics courses and the first year allows you to experience all areas of physics, which enables you to choose which path you want to take. My favourite module so far has been Mathematics for Physics 1. It challenged my thinking process and made me look at maths in a different way.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

The quality of teaching is incredible. The lecturers are actively engaged in their subjects, which makes it easier to learn. The labs are really fun. It is a break from the lectures and a chance to apply the material that has been covered in the lectures.

Have you had any support from the University?

The library is a great place to study and the librarians help with any questions you may have. There is also a Math Learning Support Centre for those that struggle with mathematical concepts.

Have you done a professional placement?

I plan on doing a year abroad. I see it as an opportunity to achieve a broader understanding of physics and the different methods of teaching. It’s a great way to gain experience in the subject area.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I hope to go into further research. Loughborough University is renowned for its research. The course also develops research skills, and keeps the students up to date with the physics world.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

I would recommend studying Physics with Astrophysics at Loughborough. The location is ideal, the lecturers are great and it’s a well-rounded University.

What do you enjoy about being a student here?

The people are friendly. It’s a large campus, but the familial environment makes everyone feel welcome from the very first day. The facilities such as the Students’ Union, the library, and the cafes around campus are wonderful too. It’s a great place to study.

The social atmosphere is great. There are a variety of activities to get engaged in and numerous societies and sports clubs to join. There is something for everyone, and if it doesn’t exist, it’s easy to start a society or club. At the moment, I’m looking to start an astronomy society!

Has Loughborough inspired you?

A lot of the work assigned is done by you. This has pushed me to think in different ways. Of course you can ask the lecturers for help, but their main aim is to push you in the right direction and make you think for yourself. This allows you to develop yourself further and discover new thought processes.
