BSc (Hons)

Why did you choose Loughborough University?

Like many students applying for university I had little idea what I wanted to do other than that I wanted to be involved in sport in some aspect. So Loughborough was at the top of my list of universities to go to because of its un-paralleled reputation as the best sporting University in the UK.

I remember sitting in the Sports Technology Institute on one of the open days and at the front of the room was a wide selection of sports equipment from some major brands. Then the lecturer said this department had worked on everything in front of me and I turned to my Dad and said, “If I’m going to succeed, it’s going to be here.” That’s when I decided I wanted to do Sports Technology.

What do you enjoy about your course?

I love how varied it is! I have modules with many other departments including Mechanical Engineering, Sports Science and Business. My course has provided me with a grounding in so many different disciplines.

The Additive Manufacturing module I did in my final year has been particularly enjoyable. On my year in industry I used a 3D printer for prototyping and did an evaluation on 3D metal printing for use in the golf industry. So to be able to continue that learning once I returned from my placement has been really satisfying.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

All the lectures I have had have been very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their subject. Supplemented by labs which utilise the latest equipment has been vital to my leaning.

Have you had any support from the University?

Since the Sports Technology department is relatively small, it’s very easy to get to know lecturers on a first name bases. So when you need advice or help they’re always willing to accommodate you into their schedule.

Have you done a professional placement?

Loughborough University is a big advocate for taking a year out during your studies and working for a company full time in the real world. I was lucky enough to spend my placement year working in America for the golf company PING, working in their research and development department. Apart from being one of the most enjoyable years of my life making new friends and memories in a different country, it gave me a lot more confidence in my own abilities and those skills I gained during my first two years at University. I’m not aware of many courses that give you an opportunity to travel half way round the world and work in the research and development department of one of the biggest golf companies in the world.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I would love to work within the sports equipment sector for a design or research company. However I feel with the varied skills I gained during my time at Loughborough there aren’t many fields I couldn’t turn my hand to.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

Many of those who attend university say it provided them with great opportunities in life; my course allowed me to live half way around the world for a year and work for a major golf brand. I know of only a handful of course in the UK that offers such a life changing opportunity and one of those is Sports Technology at Loughborough University.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

I highly recommend joining one of Loughborough’s many sports teams or societies. I joined the handball team in my first year and it was one of the best decisions I made at University. It’s an old cliché but what makes Loughborough so enjoyable is the friends you make; some of my best friends are the ones I met on my very first day at University.

Has Loughborough inspired you?

Loughborough in all its forms and service has got me to where I am today; friends, lecturers, careers advice etc. You really do feel like everything at Loughborough is geared towards helping its students succeed and getting the most out of some of the best times of your life.
