Why did you choose Loughborough University?
I’ve always had an interest in engineering and I find the study of materials fascinating, as it branches out into multiple areas. Loughborough had outstanding facilities in comparison to other universities I looked at and a very friendly atmosphere.
What attracted you to the University in the first place?
It was the materials course and the university’s reputation that initially attracted me to Loughborough. Once I visited I fell in love with the campus and the facilities, feeling relaxed in the friendly atmosphere that both the staff and students have created.
What do you enjoy about your course?
I enjoy the practical labs, where so far we have done a lot of destructive testing on materials and looked closely at grain structures to develop our understanding of the properties of different materials. I really enjoyed the trip we took to Goodwin Steel Works to see the steel casting process, which really helped with my studies and gave me an insight into the industry.
What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?
We are incredibly lucky to have such encouraging and supportive staff who try their best to guide us in our studies and provide high quality lectures and learning material.
Do you have a particularly favourite project/module on your course? Why did you enjoy it?
My favourite module was metal processing which required learning about multiple processes and the effects they would have on material.
What kind of support have you had in the department and from the University?
Last year, I had regular meetings with my personal tutor who is always on hand when I need assistance regarding work and careers advice and can point me to the right person when needs be. I’ve also received some helpful advice from the staff at the library and also the Careers Network.
What are some of the exciting/different things you can do on your course?
This year we have multiple laboratory sessions so we get to do plenty of practical work and get hands-on experience experimenting with the properties of different materials. We also have a business module every year which is interesting and insightful.
Have you completed a placement whilst at University?
I plan to do a year in industry where I hope to develop my skills and knowledge in real world scenarios and hopefully decide on what kind of environment I’d like to work in in the future.
What do you hope to do when you graduate, and how will your Loughborough degree support this?
I would definitely like to continue working with materials, however I am currently unsure what area I would like to specify in. Loughborough University will be able to point me in the right direction with help from the Careers Network, my personal tutor and staff in my department.
What would you say to someone considering your course?
It’s a brilliant course with amazing facilities and such supportive staff. Choosing this degree at Loughborough University is the best decision I’ve ever made.
How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?
This year I have joined the Street Dance Society and I’m really enjoying the experience. I get to meet like-minded people every week and have a good time as well. There are a wide variety of societies and sports clubs so there is something for everyone.
What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?
I enjoy the facilities and nightlife provided at the Student Union and I doubt many other universities have anything like it. The work achieved through Rag, Action and Sports makes me incredibly proud to be a student at Loughborough University.
Has Loughborough inspired you?
I think since starting at Loughborough I have developed as a person and my confidence has rocketed. I am inspired to succeed now and to push my own mental and physical boundaries – choosing Loughborough was definitely a risk worth taking.
