Manufacturing Engineering course overview

The Manufacturing BEng courses are IMechE and IET accredited and provide an ideal platform for graduate engineers to enter professional careers across a wide range of different manufacturing industrial sectors.

The application of engineering and manufacturing engineering principles to the solution of industrial problems is a strong theme, reflecting the requirements of the Engineering Council for accredited programmes.

The courses consider issues of manufacturing technology and processing, linked to manufacturing management, and provide an excellent platform for graduates wishing to register with the Engineering Council as an Incorporated Engineer or to progress to Chartered Engineer status after further academic learning. The transferable skills which graduates develop should also suit them to employment and career routes in a wide variety of professions.

If you choose to follow the sandwich course you will complete a full year of assessed IMechE accredited industrial training between years 2 and 3 of your academic studies, leading to the additional award of Loughborough’s well respected Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS).

Professional recognition

All Manufacturing BEng and Mechanical BEng and MEng courses are fully accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The Manufacturing Engineering course is also accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, while Product Design Engineering is also accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers.

Facilities

STEMLab is a £17 million investment in new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and part of a wider £25 million investment in our campus which includes an adjacent student learning and teaching hub.

STEMLab will include a suite of laboratories for practical work in Bioengineering, allowing students crucial opportunities to gain applied experience with biological samples in a safe and modern environment.

Assessment

Teaching and learning methods include lectures, tutorials, practical work, seminars and extensive project work. The emphasis is placed on increasing your independence and encouraging you to develop your study skills while taking part in group activities.

Lecture based modules are assessed by a combination of coursework and formal examinations taken at the end of each semester. Project module assessments require written reports and technical presentations, preparing you for your subsequent career.

The proportion of coursework assessment is approximately 30% to 50% depending on degree course, semester/year and optional modules.

Selection

Applicants are selected on the basis of their UCAS application, and additionally an interview in order to assess academic potential beyond that provided as part of the application. An interview also gives applicants the opportunity to visit the department, meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at Loughborough.

Practical Science

Practical Science is not required.

Course fees 2017/18

UK/EU fee: £9,250   |   International fee: £19,900

Placement year fees for 2020/21 are still to be confirmed. As an indication, for 2017/18 the current placement fees are set at 20% of the yearly full-time fee for UK/EU students and £3,000 for international students.

Sponsorships and scholarships

All of our courses have an established reputation with employers in industry. Companies, therefore, target the School with sandwich year opportunities and a number of companies offer sponsorship, for which there is intense competition. Students seeking sponsorship are urged to consult publications such as CRAC and Engineering Opportunities.

Competitive scholarships are also awarded. These may be based on intake qualifications and/or progress through the first year of any of the degree courses.

Students studying Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering degree courses, and intending to take up a career in the Armed Forces or Civil Service, may be eligible for financial support under the Defence Technical Undergraduate Scheme.

Graduate destinations

Recent graduate destinations include: 3M, Johnson Matthew, Proctor & Gamble, Renishaw and Triumph Motorcycles.

Industrial training and placements

We are the UK’s number one university for engineering placements sending over 45% more students on placement than any other university (2013 HESA student record).

All of our courses can be taken with a salaried industrial placement in Year 3 and over 160 students take this option every year. For the award of a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS) you need to complete a minimum of 45 weeks work in a company.

We are notified of vacancies and opportunities throughout the academic year, and we provide support and help for you to gain a suitable placement.

Students work in a variety of organisations including automotive, aerospace, electronics, consumer goods, computer software and food processing industries. Your role might be as a designer, manufacturing engineer or as a plant engineer, in research or development, or in several of these areas within one company.

Recent placement students have worked for virtually every major engineering company in the UK including; Toyota, Triumph, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, BP, Tata Steel, DERA, Vauxhall, The Boots Co. plc, Eurotherm Drives Ltd, 3M Healthcare, Schlumberger and TRW Lucas Aerospace.
