Why did you choose Loughborough University?
I chose to study my degree at Loughborough firstly for the wide range of modules available and because we get to choose most of them ourselves. I also like the way that the course is assessed – solely by coursework.
What attracted you to the University in the first place?
What set Loughborough apart from other universities I visited was the clear sense of ‘hall spirit’ and the close yet expansive bonds people seemed to have with each other. The department itself was also welcoming, friendly and accommodating on the open day.
What do you enjoy about your course?
Being able to choose which modules I want to study from a huge variety of options.
What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?
Lecturers are generally very quick to respond to any questions via email, and use LEARN to keep us up-to-date and organised.
Do you have a particularly favourite project/module on your course?
In first year I particularly enjoyed ‘Introduction to American Literature’. I had read many of the texts previously but studying them at degree level added a new dimension to my knowledge, along with invaluable information on the context that generated them. I followed up this module in second year by choosing ‘19th Century American Literature and Culture’ through which I am exploring an interest in the slave trade.
What are some of the exciting/different things you can do on your course?
I have taken the opportunity to become a Peer Mentor and thus assist first years with their transition both into the course and Loughborough life. Additionally, I also stood for election to be on the Department Committee, which has helped me to develop a variety of valuable transferrable skills.
What would you say to someone considering your course?
I would say definitely go for it! Choosing both a university and a course is a daunting yet exciting prospect, but at Loughborough the course is very flexible given the range of choices available and so you can tailor your course to suit your interests – something that is not possible at most universities.
How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?
The social atmosphere at Loughborough is amazing, second to none! There is a great sense of community spirit in halls that is truly unique to Loughborough – due to it being a small town this also applies to living off campus, too.
What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?
I enjoy being part of the Loughborough community and feeling proud of where I study. The sports facilities are incredible and widely available to all. I also love being surrounded by people who are driven and passionate, both about their course and any sport they partake in.
Has Loughborough inspired you?
Being at Loughborough has inspired me to better myself in the widest sense. Having applied for a promotion and marketing job at the Union I am now fairly sure this is a career I’d like to pursue after graduating. The availability of sporting facilities has increased my awareness of personal health and fitness, whilst the community spirit in halls has provided me with life-long friends and greatly improved my self-confidence.
