Year of Study

BSc (Hons)

Why did you choose Loughborough University?

Business was always an interesting subject for me and I wanted to learn more about it, whilst gaining practical experience during a placement year. The compulsory placement year and emphasis on gaining experience as well as learning theory was a major attraction to the School of Business and Economics. I also loved the atmosphere at Loughborough and immediately felt at home when visiting prior to attending.

What do you enjoy about your course?

The variety of modules on offer, which in final year can be tailored extensively towards your interest areas. Having a placement year was also really enjoyable as well. Currently my favourite module is Advanced Interpersonal Skills which is a final year module around personal development and goal setting. It’s been a challenging module in itself as we’ve had to each set three personal goals to achieve over the semester and so mixes practical experience with theory. The skills I’ve learnt from it can be used in other modules and life after graduation.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

The quality of teaching -  from the number of industry experts and researchers -  is really high at Loughborough and it shows in our lectures where you can tell that lecturers really love their subject area, and so pass the passion back to students.

Have you had any support from the University?

Academically I’ve had support from some really great lecturers who really want you to achieve your best. Extracurricular; I’ve had support in terms of opportunities to attend an American University for a short course in entrepreneurship (thanks to the Business School), and payment towards a personal development/leadership and cultural exchange trip in South Africa, which was set up and run by recent Loughborough graduates (Again thanks to the Business school).

I’ve also had support, guidance and access to grants from departments such as the Enterprise Office to run and develop events and new business ideas.

Have you done a professional placement?

The placement year is a really exciting year with lots of opportunities if you take them. I completed a professional placement in my third year, working as a Student Enterprise Intern for Loughborough Students’ Union and Loughborough University. I developed a number of employability skills from the experience! As well as a lot of fun memories, challenging experiences and friends.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I want to work for an SME (small to medium business) when I graduate, and I think that the knowledge and skills I’ve gained from my degree and time at Loughborough will help me to gain employment and excel in the role.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

The last four years at Loughborough have been amazing overall. I’ve had the chance to develop my skills and knowledge and develop as a person through my course and extracurricular activities.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

I’ve done a range of extracurricular activities whilst at Loughborough. Including joining the Enactus committee for three years and working to improve lives through entrepreneurship. I’ve taken part in the South Africa Challenge, a leadership and cultural exchange programme set in Durban, South Africa, and helped to organise speaker/conference style events with Fail Forward, a campaign trying to change the perception of failure. I’ve also helped to organise a global hackathon with other universities.

There’s a range of activities to do at Loughborough and there’s something for everyone. Everyone at Loughborough seems to be doing something or other socially, which in a way leads everyone to do more!

What do you enjoy most about being a student here?

The great atmosphere at the University, with the community feel of being on campus and the amazing opportunities open to students.

Has Loughborough inspired you?

The overall experience of being at Loughborough has been inspiring. I’ve learnt a lot of new skills and gained valuable knowledge from my course, but it has been the extracurricular activities and friends that I’ve made because of them which have inspired me to push myself whilst at University. It’s helped me to develop a competitiveness to do better in studies, work and hobbies, as well as the confidence to know that I can achieve more.
