This exciting programme will appeal to students with an interest in both psychology and sport. Beyond studying all major areas of psychological science, this programme focuses on the application of psychology to sport, performance and exercise environments. Through teaching and independent research, students will gain knowledge and skills related to pursuing a career as a psychologist specialising in sport and supporting athlete performance, health and wellbeing. This course is taught within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences.

Graduate destinations

This is a new course, and we will not have graduates until summer 2019. However we know from our experience and industry links that this course will equip graduates for further professional training as a qualified sport and exercise psychologist.

It will also directly facilitate further professional, postgraduate training pathways into a career as a clinical, educational, occupational, forensic or health psychologist. Beyond psychology-specific careers. this degree will serve as excellent preparation for a wide variety of industrial, commercial, financial and management careers, and for public sector work involving both the delivery and administration of services.

Students from the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences have gone on to enjoy rewarding careers within a diverse range of organisations. Recent graduate destinations have included BskyB, Aviva, Chelsea FC, Adidas, Youth Sport Trust, Deloitte, UK Sport, GB Canoeing, the Lawn Tennis Association and numerous schools and NHS Trusts.

Placements

Professional placements

Students taking the four-year course spend their third year on placement in an approved occupation relevant to their degree. Satisfactory completion of the placement leads to the award of the Diploma in Professional Studies.

Although it is the student's responsibility to arrange the placement, considerable support is available.

Students have had placements in the UK and abroad, with schools, NHS Trusts, prisons, the Home Office, the Health and Safety Executive, and various consultancies and companies.

Study abroad

You can also choose to develop your language skills by spending the year between your second and final year studying abroad at one of our partner universities around the world. This results in the award of a Diploma in International Studies in addition to your degree. Additionally, you could combine a shorter business placement abroad with one semester studying in a partner university taught in English.
