Physics

Physics and Management

General information

Scientists often find themselves in managerial positions, and this course is designed for the physicist with an interest in the process of management.

Graduates have a broad understanding of the physical science which underlies much of industry, together with an understanding of the way that companies work and familiarity with the process and functions of management.

The overall management content of the course is 50%. The course covers the core of the BSc Physics course and provides an introduction to the main management functions together with the opportunity to study in depth chosen aspects of both disciplines.

Industrial Placement or European Study

The BSc Physics and Management course can be studied in three or four years. In the four-year version you take a year out between the second and final years of academic study.

Career Prospects

Physics and Management graduates are ideally suited for management careers in technically based companies where their physics and business skills can be exploited to the full (please see general physics career examples).

Course structure

Year 1

The Physics core content is similar to that of the MPhys and BSc Physics, and the MPhys and BSc Engineering Physics courses. In addition students take at least five modules dealing with the process and functions of management.

Years 2 and 3

Management modules on Marketing and Financial Management make up half of Year 2. The physics components of the second and third years are drawn from the BSc Physics course. There is a project in the final year together with a wide choice of physics options.

In the final year there is a compulsory module on Strategic Management and a wide range of options in other areas of management; you can spend up to almost half your time on management in this year.
