Information Science
Information Management and Web Development
General information
This course is administered by the Department of Information Science in conjunction with the Department of Computer Science and meets the demand for graduates with interdisciplinary skills for application across the whole range of computer and information based industries. In particular this course aims to encourage students to develop an appreciation of how these skills can be applied to Web Development.
It offers an integrated approach to all aspects of information handling and processing with an emphasis on information representation, communication and management.
The course has a common first two years with the Information Management and Computing Course, enabling students the opportunity to switch the focus of their studies, if they wish, in their final year.
Pre-Course Experience
Knowledge of IT and computing is valuable. Students must have a desire to learn how web-based products are designed and constructed. Problem solving skills would be an advantage.
Career Prospects
Recent research for the Department of Information Science has indicated that job titles such as internet and e-communications manager, enterprise information architect, information manager, intranet manager, web services manager and portal content manager are starting to appear alongside more traditional job titles such as ‘webmaster’. The course will equip graduates for these evolving roles.
