The Department

Managing information resources, whether in libraries and information centres, in publishing companies and the media, or on computers and networks, demands people with a range of advanced skills and knowledge.

The courses offered by the Department of Information Science prepare you for a role in managing and exploiting information, in whatever its form, in the information society.

This well-resourced Department has 20 academic staff, including five Professors, supported by technical, clerical and administrative staff. There are approximately 350 undergraduate students in the Department, with around 120 being admitted to all the undergraduate courses each year.

Sandwich Placements

The Department offers a number of industry placement opportunities, where you are able to take a year out in industry. It provides support throughout the process and has enabled students to gain experience in many successful and prestigious companies, examples include: Accenture, Shell, Yell, 3M, IPC Magazines, IBM, Telegraph Group Newspapers and Intel.

Selection

All suitable applicants are invited to an Open Day at the Department for a briefing on the programmes, a tour and an interview. A buffet lunch is provided at which you can mix informally with current students and lecturers. Offers are made after careful consideration of your UCAS form and the interview.

Institutional Accreditation and Industry Links

The Department maintains excellent relations with the information management, computing and publishing professions. Our graduates can qualify for professional membership of the British Computer Society or the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).

Courses are designed to meet the demands of these professions and visiting professionals contribute to teaching.
