Undergraduate study 2013 prospectus

School of the Arts

Fine Art

General information

This is a multi and inter-disciplinary Fine Art course. The first class reputation of the Fine Art course is founded on the commitment of our staff and students to the development of contemporary Fine Art practice, through inclusive pathways which embrace the fields of Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture and New Media.

Whatever your chosen area of practice, your study course will consist of a structured sequence of modules. In Year 1 the course is introductory with a common first year, Year 2 is developmental and Year 3 offers the opportunity to synthesise these learning experiences.

You will undertake some core and some optional modules in studio practice, and also subjects which provide a contextual, theoretical or professional/entrepreneurial platform for your practice. The Critical and Historical Studies element aims to encourage an integration of research, reading and analysis with studio practice and to build confidence in the articulation of ideas.

Selection

The School welcomes applicants with both traditional and non-traditional qualifications. It is preferred that applicants will have completed a Foundation Diploma or similar, in order to produce a portfolio on which, in conjunction with an interview, selection is largely based. However, this is no longer mandatory and consideration will be given to applicants applying from A-Level study.

Career Prospects

A number of students go on to take up on postgraduate places in Art and Design subjects, Art Therapy, Teacher training and courses including the Royal College of Art, the Royal Academy, Wimbledon and the University for the Arts.

Other students have entered an extraordinary broad range of other professional occupations in the film industry, the BBC, Madame Tussauds, Christies and John Galliano Studios for example.
