Why did you choose Loughborough University?
My course is very specialist and there are not many universities that offer it. Loughborough’s course is by far the best one of its kind in the country, so I really wanted to get a place here. It also offers a placement year, which is something I very much want to do.
What attracted you to the University in the first place?
One of the key factors was that everything is on one campus. You’re never too far away from any lecture and with a free bus service running throughout the day it’s very easy to get from one end of campus to another. The Civil and Building Engineering Department is very modern inside with spacious lecture theatres – staff are very friendly and helpful too.
What do you enjoy about your course?
Having studied mathematics, physics and geography at A-Level, it makes a nice change to learn about topics that concern my preferred industry. Lectures cover very different areas to the aviation industry and as I get further into the course it becomes increasingly apparent that modules go hand-in-hand with each other. The intake of students on my course is small in comparison to others, so I’ve developed strong friendships with other students.
What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?
The teaching quality is excellent. Staff are great at explaining new material and always willing to help if you don’t understand something.
Do you have a particularly favourite project/module on your course? Why did you enjoy it?
In first year we had to write a report on a new destination Jet2 should fly to. I thoroughly enjoyed this as it is the kind of work I’m considering for my career. We are currently studying a module called Airline Business Strategies, which is lectured by guest speakers from the aviation industry. I’m really enjoying this at the moment, too.
Have you completed a placement whilst at University?
I intend to secure a placement with a company in the aviation industry this year. I’m applying to a variety of different companies, such as British Airways and the Manchester Airports Group. I hope to gain industry experience in the aviation sector, as this is a key quality that employers look for.
What do you hope to do when you graduate, and how will your Loughborough degree support this?
I’d like to pursue a career in the airline industry as a commercial airline pilot. My degree will provide strong foundations for a general appreciation and understanding of the aviation industry, so there will be plenty of other career paths open to me, too. Studying this course has really expanded my interests in the aviation industry – when I first started my heart was set on becoming a commercial airline pilot. Now, I feel like there are so many more jobs I’d like to try, too!
What would you say to someone considering your course?
For starters, this course should be your first choice without a doubt. It is the best of its kind in the country and with a placement year on offer it’s hard to turn down! It is ideal for anyone with a strong passion for the aviation industry and intentions to pursue a career in aviation.
How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?
The social atmosphere at Loughborough is superb. I’m part of the transport society Velocity, the DJ society, AU Badminton and I’m also a volunteer for Action, all of which keep me very busy! There is so much you can get involved with here. If there’s anything I regret about first year, it would be not getting involved enough. The nights out in Loughborough are always very enjoyable – a great way to spend the evenings with your mates. The whole student experience at Loughborough is second to none!
What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?
I could write a huge list on what I enjoy most about being a student at Loughborough University. If I had to choose one thing, it would be the sense of pride that comes with being a student at one of the UK’s top universities. I love it here!
