Computer Science course overview

Computer Science is a rapidly evolving and increasingly important field, pervasive in almost all areas of science and modern day life. Computer Science graduates are therefore in high demand across an increasingly diverse range of industries.

The Computer Science course is firmly grounded in theory and practice; a strong emphasis is placed on mathematical ability, logic and programming. The course offers numerous quality placement opportunities in industry, and can be tailored to a variety of career paths via the choice of specialist modules.

Computer Scientists need a diverse set of practical and theoretical skills. This course provides students with a strong foundation in the critical areas of Computer Science whilst also giving the opportunity to tailor the degree to their own strengths, interests and career aspirations via the choice of specialised modules and project work, which are taught and supervised by world leading experts.

Flexible learning

You will be learning a balance of theory and practice, meeting the demands of both a rapidly evolving subject and those of employers. In addition to the academic content, emphasis is placed on the development of your professional, managerial and presentation skills.

Upon graduation, you will possess a sound understanding of the fundamentals of computing and a flexible, well-developed approach to problem solving.

We continually monitor course content for quality and make improvements based on feedback from students, senior industrialists and accrediting bodies such as the British Computer Society and the Tech Partnership. Major companies are directly involved in sponsoring our modules, supporting project work and providing guest lectures and prizes.

The MSCi degree

The Masters in Science (MSci) degrees provide an ideal preparation for research and development work in industry or for a PhD. They are designed to create leaders in the subject area by giving in-depth experience of cutting edge research.

The final year provides a broad understanding and study of entrepreneurship, leadership and management, together with team working skills. There is also a significant, research based individual project conducted with a member of academic staff.

Industry accreditation

The British Computer Society (BCS) has granted accreditation of this course for the educational requirement for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) registration. This also enables graduates to obtain full professional membership of the BCS (MBCS).

In addition, for MSci courses, accreditation has been granted for the educational requirement for Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Scientist (CSci) registration.

Assessment

Depending on the nature of the material, some modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework and examination (for example 25% coursework and 75% examination), whilst other modules are assessed by 100% coursework or 100% by examination.

Coursework is based on a variety of tasks including individual essays, projects, laboratory work, contribution in tutorials, group work and presentations.

Selection

Applicants are usually selected solely on the basis of their UCAS application.  If applicants are made an offer of a place, they will be invited to visit the department giving them the opportunity to meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at Loughborough.

Professional placement (sandwich)

An additional professional placement year is available and is highly recommended by both the Department and former students.

Many students in the past have chosen to take this option and have found it a valuable experience that has enhanced their studies and employment opportunities.

Satisfactory completion leads to the additional award of a Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS).

During the placement year, the student is employed in a company and treated as a graduate trainee. Many companies offer regular training opportunities which supplement the course modules, providing experience on a wide range of commercial software and business practice.

Responsibility for finding a suitable placement rests with the student, but assistance is given by the Department’s Professional Placement Tutor who has contacts with a wide range of industrial and commercial organisations.

Many students find employment with IT companies and other major industries, and some placements may be with small establishments, matched on the basis of subject or geographical location.
