Commercial Management and Quantity Surveying course overview

The course specialises in the legal and financial issues involved in managing construction projects and is sponsored by a consortium of companies that offer sponsorships, work placements and graduate jobs.

The course specialises in the legal and financial issues involved in managing construction projects. Students develop detailed knowledge of building and engineering Contract Law and construction contract procedures, along with understanding of commercial issues such as risk and cost management. The course is sponsored by a consortium of companies that offer sponsorships, work placements and graduate jobs.

The CMQS course is fully accredited by both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors, and prepares its graduates for commercial management roles in the building or civil engineering sectors of the construction industry.

Professional recognition

The degree is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and provides graduate entry to the profession. It is also accredited by the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.

Sponsorships

The course is run in conjunction with a consortium of major construction contractors, who help in the admissions process and also offer sponsorship and placement opportunities. Suitable applicants will be invited to attend a recruitment day and will be interviewed by both members of academic staff and members of the sponsoring consortium.

In reaching decisions about sponsorship, companies will consider work permit restrictions and expect students to be eligible to work in the UK after graduation.

Selection

Applicants are selected on the basis of their UCAS application, and additionally an interview in order to assess academic potential beyond that provided as part of the application. An interview also gives applicants the opportunity to visit the department, meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at Loughborough.

Course fees 2017/18

UK/EU fee: £9,250   |   International fee: £19,900

Placement year fees for 2020/21 are still to be confirmed. As an indication, for 2017/18 the current placement fees are set at 20% of the yearly full-time fee for UK/EU students and £3,000 for international students.

Graduate destinations

This course trains graduates to work with equal ease in any aspect of the quantity surveying profession, in consultants’ offices, for a construction company, for central or local Government, or for property departments of major companies.

Industrial placements

We are the UK’s number one university for engineering placements sending over 45% more students on placement than any other university (2014/15 HESA student record)

This course includes a paid year working in industry. The School’s close links with industrial partners means we are able to provide our students with considerable help in sourcing and securing their placement.

The year in industry provides many benefits. Placement students earn a salary, typically over £16,500 per annum, and many are offered a permanent job with their host company when they graduate.

Recent companies who have employed placement students from this course include Balfour Beatty, Kier, Laing O’Rourke, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Sir Robert McAlpine, Skanska, Taylor Woodrow and Tony Gee.
