Civil Engineering course overview

As a Civil Engineer, you can improve quality of life through (re)building or maintaining vital infrastructure. They also solve issues, including supplying energy and clean water to homes, processing and recycling waste, and pollution.

The School offers four Civil Engineering courses: an MEng consisting of 4 years full-time study, a BEng of 3 years full-time study, and two equivalent sandwich courses, each of which includes a period spent in industry after two years academic work and leads to the appropriate degree award plus a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS).

Suitably qualified students may enrol directly on the MEng course. Students on the BEng course may transfer to the MEng at the end of Year 2, subject to satisfactory performance.

The courses also offer sponsorship, an outdoor management course and gives you the opportunity to study at an overseas university either in Europe, the USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong or Australia for up to six months in your final year.

Professional recognition

The Civil Engineering courses are accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Highways and Transportation by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM). The courses meet the current UK-SPEC requirements of the Engineering Council (ECUK).

Specifically, the BEng is accredited as:

  • Fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
  • Partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) - a course of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng

Selection

Applicants are usually selected solely on the basis of their UCAS application.  If applicants are made an offer of a place, they will be invited to visit the department giving them the opportunity to meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at Loughborough.

Sponsorship scheme

All MEng students, and students who have passed the first year of the BEng course, have the opportunity to apply for sponsorship, through the school, to a consortium of leading UK companies. Sponsorship will provide you with a bursary during your studies, summer placement work if you want it and employment for a twelve month period of industrial training.

Industrial placements

Sponsored students will complete a paid year working with their sponsor company.  If you are not sponsored the School’s close links with industrial partners means we are able to provide our students with considerable help in sourcing and securing their placement.

The year in industry can provide many benefits. Placement students earn a salary, typically over £16,500 per annum, and many are offered a permanent job with their host company when they graduate.
