“I seldom feel homesick as a LU international student because there are so many activities I can join to fill up my free time.”

Year of Study

Why did you choose Loughborough University?

I chose Loughborough University because it is a privilege to study at one of the top universities in the UK. It has the best student experience a university could offer.

What attracted you to the University in the first place?

The campus-based setting feels very homely and everything is within walking distance, unlike many other universities that are scattered all over the city centre.

What do you enjoy about your course?

I enjoy problem class the most, where we are asked to solve problems after every topic completed. It involves a combination of teamwork and critical thinking, enhancing our soft skills as we learn to tackle every problem together.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

The Chemical Engineering laboratories are fully equipped with a range of process equipment that is often found in industry. The teaching quality is good and is carried out via a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory experiments and practical exercises.

Do you have a particularly favourite project/module on your course? Why did you enjoy it?

My favourite modules so far have been the Heat Transfer and Engineering Thermodynamics modules in first year, as they were challenging and a great thrill. They required a lot of practice and an in-depth understanding of Physics and Chemistry, which built upon the knowledge I already had from A-level.

What kind of support have you had in the department and from the University?

There is a wide range of support available across campus ranging from academic to non-academic support – you name it, they have it! The endless advice and support I’ve received from lecturers in my department has improved my communication, study skills, presentations etc.

Pilkington Library offers a complete range of services to support and enhance student learning experiences, not to forget the excellent IT services. Additionally, whenever I have faced mathematical difficulties the Mathematics Learning Support Centre (MLSC) has always been there to help.
I can also get spiritual support from the Centre for Faith and Spirituality, which is on campus. People here are very motivational and supportive and are always ready to lend a hand or offer a boost of faith.

What are some of the exciting/different things you can do on your course?

I get the opportunity to apply knowledge I’ve learnt during lectures practically, operating and controlling industrial equipment and instruments with my fantastic group members.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

If you are looking to balance a Chemical Engineering degree with sport and a social lifestyle, I would encourage you to make Loughborough University your first choice. Everyone here is lovely; you will make friends with lots of people from different backgrounds and cultures. This allows you to build a connection with people from around the world, which could be beneficial for your future career whilst also allowing you to develop many international friendships.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

I seldom feel homesick as a LU international student because there are so many activities I can join to fill up my free time. I was once in the Athletic Union’s Table Tennis team and it was the best team I’ve ever been part of. We had competitive and friendly matches every weekend, which was a great way of socialising and releasing stress.

MyLifestyle is a weekly activity that consists of a range of different sports – you don’t have to be good at them to get involved! I’m part of a salsa dance club and I’m enjoying it – the instructors are great and are so patient when teaching newcomers. Being involved in such activities has been a life-changing experience for me.

What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?

I love being able to use world-class sports facilities such as for outdoor and indoor sports, the gym and the swimming pool. Moreover, academically, many large companies and graduate employers target Loughborough University for potential employees. This thought enlightens me and I feel very grateful to have had the opportunity to complete a degree here.
