Why did you choose Loughborough University?
I have always had an interest in chemistry and physics, and I have long maintained an interest in how every day products are produced on a large scale. Chemical engineering builds a foundation of mathematical and physical principles, and applies these to the large scale production of chemical and non-chemical fluids. Further to this, the importance of chemical engineering to a wide range of industries brought a range of exciting employment opportunities, both here and abroad.
Loughborough was always my first choice due to its strong reputation in the engineering disciplines and the overall excellent university experience which it offers. In particular, the department offers a range of options including management, languages and specific industry-related modules, which overall bring a well-rounded course suitable for starting in any industry.
What do you enjoy about your course?
The challenging and comprehensive nature of the course keeps it engaging and stimulating no matter which module or project is presented to us. Most importantly though, the applicability of the discipline to the modern world, makes it continually stimulating and helps me to persist with pushing myself to achieve my very best.
One of my favourite modules has been the design project. The challenging nature of the design project made it the most enjoyable module within the course. Here, I was able to utilise my knowledge and skills from every area of the discipline and combine them to design a full chemical plant. The fact that I have now gained the ability to use a combination of all these skills to design a fully working plant is what made this project truly engaging.
What exciting things have you been able to do as part of your course?
The Chemical Engineering course at Loughborough offers its Masters students the opportunity to complete their research project abroad at any university, or in industry. I chose to complete mine at Harvard University, USA. My project involved the design, construction and testing of a bioreactor for water purification. The project was both exciting and challenging, and was completed within the allocated time and to a high quality. Further to this, I had an amazing time in Boston and was able to travel the country with friends afterwards. I visited New York, L.A, San Francisco and Miami, amongst other cities/states. Overall, I had an incredible experience, and so far it has been the best six months of my life.
What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?
The teaching quality at Loughborough is excellent; the lecturers are true experts in their field, and all provide expertise in both the traditional theoretical application as well as the most cutting edge technologies in their respective fields. The regular lab work allows us to make use of their pioneering pilot lab, helping us to gain a real understanding of fluid flow, packed beds and porous media.
Have you had any support from the University?
The department is always there to offer guidance and support in every module, as well as general university life. We are each assigned a tutor on our first day who, through regular meetings, we develop a personal relationship with. At any time, we are able to discuss any educational and non-educational issues with them.
Have you done a professional placement?
I completed a year in industry at TOTAL Lindsey Oil Refinery as a Student Process Engineer. I was involved in multiple large projects, covering a range of process units and equipment.
Overall, I was able to develop a deep understanding of almost all of the on-site process equipment, understand the underlying economic challenges facing the oil industry and develop my general engineering design and problem solving skills. The experience was both exciting and challenging throughout and ultimately, I was offered sponsorship for my final two years of University and a graduate role with the company upon graduation.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
I will be returning to TOTAL, where I completed my year in industry.
What would you say to someone considering your course?
I would highly recommend the course at Loughborough for its engaging, dynamic learning experience as well as the wide-ranging and enjoyable social activities which the University offers. For anyone who wishes to gain a fundamental and industry-applicable understanding of chemical engineering, and who aims to become a well-rounded person, Loughborough is for you.
How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?
Although it is famed for its sports, Loughborough offers much more than this: I joined the debating and Model United Nations societies, as well as rowing, boxing, mixed martial arts, badminton, softball and ultimate Frisbee societies throughout my four years at Loughborough.
Every society offers a broad experience in their respective areas, as well as a vibrant and lively social experience. Everybody I have met has been friendly and most people become friends instantly – since I started at Loughborough, my friendship group has ballooned.
Has Loughborough inspired you?
I am a proud Loughborough student who has had an incredible experience at the University. I enjoy the fact that I have developed massively since I started – the rich social experiences and stimulating conversation with every student I have encountered, has helped me become a well-rounded and more focussed person. Loughborough has helped to inspire me to become a career-focussed person, who aims to succeed and continually improve myself.
