Why did you choose Loughborough University?

Initially I was adamant that I was going to Birmingham University to study mechanical engineering; however I came to Loughborough for an interview and completely changed my mind. The automotive focus of the course, the depth of study and the variety of research areas being worked on in the department made me realise that Loughborough was somewhere I really wanted to be.

What attracted you to the University in the first place?

I could tell from the attitude of the students and staff who I met that they were proud to be a part of Loughborough, and the course seemed like one of the best I had come across. The campus was a big draw with everything being in one place. It is very difficult to walk across campus without seeing someone you know to stop and talk to – it really makes the ‘Loughborough bubble’ feel like a community.

The department are always working on a variety of exciting projects and staff are enthusiastic and welcoming. My view was that enthusiastic staff would lead to great teaching and support – I found that other universities didn't seem as welcoming.

What do you enjoy about your course?

I enjoy the variety of modules studied. The course really prepares you for a career in the automotive industry by covering many of the aspects you would expect to find in industry with the addition of business knowledge, team working skills and interpersonal skills. The course opens up many career opportunities such as in engineering, finance, teaching and business, demonstrating the value of engineering graduates.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

The teaching quality is brilliant. Lecturers are very enthusiastic about their subject and there is a great support network between staff and students. The department are always keen to improve by taking on-board student feedback and keeping up with industry trends, making the course the best it can be.

Have you had any support from the University?

The support network at Loughborough is fantastic. I have been heavily involved in the course representative structure and I have represented my course academically and as a course chair; I have found that the university and department are very keen to receive feedback with which to improve the course. Extracurricular support is also brilliant, with lots of opportunities to improve and try something new.

Have you completed a placement whilst at university?

I have conducted two placements – a summer placement at Ford Motor Company and a 12 month placement at Millbrook Proving Ground. Both placements were secured thanks to the extra-curricular activities I participate in at Loughborough. The course itself is very well respected but the fact that I have been involved with the department committee set me apart from other candidates. Placement was a great experience and allowed me to get a feel for the industry – knowing that I was only there for 12 months drove me to get as much out of it as possible. Not only has placement set me up to better deal with my studies in final year, it has also increased my employability after graduation.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I want to carry on working in engineering, possibly in a testing role. I am currently applying for roles in both the UK and abroad and my degree is very well respected. Having spoken to a variety of employers, it is clear that my degree will enable me to work in roles in project management, finance and other engineering disciplines. My degree from Loughborough has given me everything I need for a very successful career.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

Studying at Loughborough has been the best decision I have ever made. The course can be hard work, but looking back on how much I have learnt makes me feel incredibly proud. Loughborough is an amazing place and has helped me to develop both academically and personally. I can't imagine being anywhere else!

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

The social atmosphere at Loughborough is brilliant. There is so much to do; I missed it whilst on placement and was excited to get back. There is something for everyone here – you can try something new and meet people with the same interests as you. It is difficult not to have a huge network of friends at Loughborough if you get involved with the many activities on offer.

What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?

The sense of pride I have. The University is so well respected in terms of its academic status, student experience and sporting credentials that it is difficult not to feel proud to study here.

Has Loughborough inspired you?

Loughborough has completely changed who I am as a person. I have become a much more rounded, confident and knowledgeable and am so pleased with how I have progressed.

Loughborough has also inspired me to make a difference. I have been involved with a lot of improvements in my department as well as being on the department committee, and I have seen what my own determination can achieve. This will stay with me as I continue to work towards my professional goals.
