Why did you choose Loughborough University?

For the course – at the time of applying it was the only University which offered such a broad range of topics relating to design management.

What attracted you to the University in the first place?

The course.

What do you enjoy about your course?

Having a small class with plenty of interaction and group coursework tasks, as it enables everyone to become closer and work in a team.

What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?

The teaching quality is very good for our course modules. The facilities are also good – the model-making room and study room (new in my second year) are very beneficial and are great spaces to work. I also like to use the outside study space in summer months.

Do you have a particularly favourite project/module on your course? Why did you enjoy it?

The design project module in third year was my favourite. This was very detailed and challenging and allowed me to use all the skills I’ve learnt over the years, focussing them into one final project. It demonstrated the perspective required for a real project in industry.

What kind of support have you had in the department and from the University?

My personal tutor has been amazing and supported me throughout my time at Loughborough University. She has always been there to help me personally and academically. I am also dyslexic and the student support team in the department are really helpful – they get to know you and it is really nice not to just be treated like another number.

What are some of the exciting/different things you can do on your course?

This year has been exciting – we have been able to use the modelling lab and engineering lab. This allows for hands-on teaching, rather than just sitting in a classroom.

Have you completed a placement whilst at University?

I completed two summer placements. I have not completed a year in industry as through my placements I was offered a graduate job for after I complete my studies.

What do you hope to do when you graduate, and how will your Loughborough degree support this?

I have been offered a place on the Laing O’Rourke Design Management Graduate Programme. If it wasn’t for my degree at Loughborough I would not have secured a summer placement with Laing O’Rourke, and therefore would not have been offered a place on their graduate programme.

What would you say to someone considering your course?

Go for it and be prepared to work hard. It will be worth it thanks to the variety of knowledge you can learn about the construction industry as a whole.

How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?

It has been amazing – particularly first and second year. Lots of my friends are on placement this year and the workload is very intense in third year, so it is a bit quieter!

What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?

It’s a well-respected university and industries want to hire you because of that.

Has Loughborough inspired you?

Yes, it has made me believe in myself – I know that if I work hard I can reach my goals.
