Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering
Why did you choose Loughborough University?
Wallace and Gromit inspired me to become an Engineer. I wanted to be able to make inventions just like they did! Why aeronautical? I suppose I just wanted to understand the magic behind what makes planes fly.
What attracted you to the University in the first place?
I loved the homely feel of Loughborough University. Moving away from home for the first time can be quite daunting, but Loughborough felt like somewhere I would be able to settle into and find my way around.
What do you enjoy about your course?
The course is really good in the sense that practical aspects are applied to help you understand the theory behind what you are taught. For example, the flight test course in third year was really great.
My favourite module is Flight Dynamics. The theory has been built up since first year from simple techniques to a really advanced understanding in final year. For me, it is a very logical module that describes the motion of flight.
The University also has a flight simulator which is used to explore the dynamics of flight. This really helps you to understand everything you are taught in your lectures from the comfort (and safety) of the department.
What do you think of the teaching quality and facilities?
There is always supporting material available to further your understanding of what you are taught in lectures. The labs are interactive and enable you to have a hands-on approach to engineering.
Have you had any support from the University?
The University was extremely supportive during my placement year. Whilst it is your own responsibility to find a placement, the University provide a vast pool of information to assist you. On my placement year, I never felt abandoned by Loughborough University and was kept in the loop with news bulletins etc. to help my transition back in fifth year.
Have you completed a placement whilst at university?
I did a placement year with AgustaWestland, a company who manufacture helicopters. I was extremely lucky to be in the flight test department where I flew in helicopters every day. There were also multiple opportunities to network, so I was able to link with contacts that could help with my search for employment after graduating.
What do you hope to do when you graduate?
I hope to join a world-leading engineering company and work in their flight test department. The modules I have studied have set me up perfectly for this type of job and employers are always happy to see a degree from Loughborough University.
What would you say to someone considering your course?
Come to Loughborough! The quality of teaching is great and you will not find a wider range of extracurricular activities anywhere. Loughborough is the whole package.
How do you find the social atmosphere on campus?
I am part of the East Midlands University Air Squadron, which has given me so many opportunities. I have learnt to fly, ski and sail all whilst completing my degree.
I am also part of the Volleyball Club which offers a great social aspect as well as involvement in the highly regarded sport element of Loughborough University.
What do you enjoy the most about being a Loughborough University student?
There is a strong feeling of esprit de corps between Loughborough students. Since it is a campus University, you get to know the grounds and its students really well. There is a shared sense of pride and everybody supports one another to achieve the best they can.
Has Loughborough inspired you?
Loughborough University has inspired me to achieve and be the best that I can be. The extracurricular activities on offer have opened many new doors that would otherwise not be available. Being surrounded by so many high achievers inspires you to do better and be of the same standard.
