Renewables: Solar 1 Distance Learning

This course provides an understanding of the facts governing the nature, availability and characteristics of the solar resource at chosen sites and the fundamental concepts of photovoltaics (PV) and thermal conversion. Conversion technologies are examined in terms of design, efficiency, manufacturing options and costs.
This course covers the following areas:-
The characteristics of the solar resource and its variability in the context of solar energy systems.
Design principles and components used in photovoltaic systems.
The principles, design and manufacturing concepts behind common semiconductor PV devices;
Operational principles of flat plate solar thermal collectors
- Principles of passive solar in buildings.
The aim of this module is to introduce the facts governing the nature, availability and characteristics of the solar resources and the fundamental concepts of photovoltaics and solar thermal conversion. The conversion technologies are examined critically in terms of design, efficiency, manufacturing options and costs.
On completion, students should be able to design PV and solar thermal systems for optimal energy conversion at a given location.
Delivered completely online this course will offer you the flexibility of working at your own pace at the most convenient time of the day.
The course will take one semester (15 weeks) to complete.
You can choose to take *formal assessment at Loughborough and if successful can accumulate credits towards your personal CPD portfolio. By obtaining credits you may also be eligible to progress towards a postgraduate award.
Please note that the course will run again in September 2018. An additional Loughborough administration fee of £250 is charged for taking exams off campus. However you will have to pay further costs to arrange and use an approved local exam centre.
