Subject in a Box is designed to enable teachers of year 10 students to provide their class with a unique insight into degree-level study whilst providing an engaging, interactive lesson, suitable for their current level of learning.
Each box has had input from one of our University academics and has been tailored for year 10 students aged 14-15 years.* We send your chosen box directly to your school free of charge, complete with a lesson plan, presentation, worksheets and the equipment required to deliver the lesson.** After the lesson, you can send us your students’ work to be exhibited in our Subject in a Box gallery.
*To help us track the impact and engagement of the Subject in a Box programme, we ask that all schools provide postcode data for participating students, or complete our EMWPREP consent forms. We will post your selected box to you as soon as we receive this data
**Please note: where a box includes perishables, we may ask the school to provide these. All other equipment is provided free of charge.
Are you able to bring a box and deliver a session in our school? Unfortunately, as this is a national initiative, currently not able to allocate staff to deliver subject in a box sessions in schools. All boxes come with lesson plans to help teaching staff confidently deliver sessions. If you need any further advice or support, please contact email@example.com.
Why do schools need to provide data to gain access to the boxes? The Schools, College Liaison team is committed to demonstrating the reach and impact of all the outreach interventions we deliver. As one of the overall aims for the Subject in a Box programme is to widen access to higher education for underrepresented groups , by providing us with this data, we can track the reach boxes have in engaging with children from these underrepresented groups.
How will the data I provide be stored? Information provided through the widening participation data sheet will be stored on a password encoded network for a period of 3 years. Data provided via EMWPREP consent form is stored on a secure database for an indefinite period of time. More information on Loughborough’s data protection policy can be found here
Why is there a time limit on box usage? With Subject in a Box open to schools nationally, it is vital we have enough time to restock boxes before sending them out to their next school. The two week time limit allows us to adequately deal with high volumes of bookings for each of the boxes. Is there a cost for postage? The SCL team will cover the postage cost for sending boxes from Loughborough’s Campus to your school. We ask that schools to cover the postage cost of returning the box to us*, using the address details provided.
*Please note cost of postage varies between the individual boxes. Architecture, Physics and Chemistry are larger boxes (due to session equipment requirements).
