Student life

We are committed to providing our students with every opportunity to achieve their full potential – professionally, intellectually and socially. The Students’ Union and Loughborough University Arts offer plenty of ways to get involved and unwind after a busy day.

A research-intensive, top 10 ranked university, with an outstanding record for providing the best student experience, Loughborough University offers everything you could ask for as a postgraduate student. Our students enjoy a great location in the middle of the UK, a friendly campus community with comprehensive support systems, and incredible opportunities for social activities, sport, and the arts.

The Students’ Union

We are passionate about providing our members with every opportunity to achieve their full potential – professionally, intellectually and socially. Loughborough Students’ Union (LSU) is the driving force behind the Loughborough experience, and students are at the heart of everything we do.

Studying your degree is just one part of student life; getting involved in Union activities also provides opportunities to meet friends from across the globe, challenge yourself in new activities and experience and develop valuable transferable skills.

Postgraduate students are encouraged to get involved in every aspect of Union activities and services. From 2016, postgraduate students at Loughborough are represented on the Union Executive team by a full-time Executive Officer to ensure the Students' Union can continue to offer an exceptional postgraduate experience.

The Union also works to promote positive health and wellbeing for all students and, alongside the University’s Support Services, can help with everything from exam stress to finding accommodation. Within LSU there is also Student Voice, a confidential and non-judgemental service that is run independently from the university. The Voice team provides pastoral support and academic guidance to students of the university, and has a Postgraduate and International Specialist who works to provide specific support to our postgraduate and international communities.

In your spare time, there is something for everyone. You can join in with our Rag charity fundraising, community Action volunteering, the Media Centre, the Athletic Union and over 100 different clubs and societies. These opportunities offer you unforgettable experiences that will stay with you for life.

The Students’ Union also offers a programme of trips across the UK- a great way to relax for the day, meet new people, and (perfect for students from overseas) take in the sights! Our list of destinations includes London, Liverpool (including the Cavern Club), Cadbury World in Birmingham, Manchester Christmas Market, Chester Zoo and many more.

The Union building

The LSU building is buzzing with students throughout the day and night. With food outlets, a Starbucks, and a bar and nightclub, there are always opportunities to meet up and socialise with friends. The central Piazza is a lively meeting place with acoustic musical performances, a cafe serving a variety of food and our own supermarket. In 2016, LSU opened John Cooper's restaurant and bar, serving a number of high quality meals and varied drinks, including cocktails and fine ales.

The building is also well equipped with other amenities like a Chinese restaurant, a hairdresser, an optician, a dentist, a taxi rank, a pharmacy, sports massage and beauty salon.

Loughborough University Arts

LU Arts is the University’s arts programme, offering you a wide variety of art events and creative development opportunities. Our events include, in various venues across the campus, live music from celebrated performers, National Theatre Live screenings, talks, performance poetry and literature events and workshops.

If you are looking to get involved and develop your own creativity then why not join the University Choir or perform at Speech Bubble? If you play an instrument then you could join the String Orchestra, or take up the subsidised music tuition on offer (conditions apply). You can also take classes in pottery, painting, and drawing, or join a book club.

LU Arts also includes Radar, a contemporary arts strand, where we invite artists to respond to research. These projects allow people to engage with research in a completely different way that usually combines artistic outputs and discursive events like talks, workshops and seminars.
