  • Energy, markers and detection
  • Crime and security
  • Chemical process technologies
  • Catalysis and functional molecules

Our PhD students are a key part of the active and dynamic postgraduate community on campus. As a Chemistry PhD student at Loughborough, you will be encouraged to participate in conferences and present your research, in order to widen your perspective and grow your research network. Further information about our research areas can be found on our chemistry research page.

Extracurricular activities

We have a range of opportunities for you to get involved with outside of your studies. This includes our STEM project where you can volunteer to become a Science Engineering Ambassador and work in local Schools to encourage young people to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths activities. This rewarding project will be fantastic experience if you are interested in a career in Science and teaching.

Our facilities

We are located inside a modern, spacious building, which includes research laboratories and study areas for where you can gain first-hand experience of the latest techniques in analytical, environmental, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry.

We offer additional facilities for the study of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, high resolution mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography.

Students can also benefit from a new £17 million STEMLab, offering the most advanced and up-to-date laboratories for students across a range of disciplines.

Access to our facilities will allow you to gain experience of the latest techniques. Our laboratories contain a full range of analytical and spectroscopic instrumentation, a worldclass mass spectrometry suite, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, laser spectroscopy and a dedicated bio-lab.
