Project detail

Product customisation has been shown to add value through an increased willingness to pay on the part of the consumer. However, customisation, even when undertaken through new digital fabrication methods, typically increases production costs and design complexity. It is therefore essential for designers to understand the value/cost ratio when determining which features should be customisable. This project will begin by analysing existing products from a number of sectors, to identify the types of features suitable for customisation by digital fabrication technologies. It will then compare the added design/production costs against the increased ‘willingness to pay’, with the intention of creating a cost/benefits model. A methodology will be developed to assist designers in identifying high value-adding features that are customisable within the capabilities of modular, hybrid manufacturing and assembly, i.e. by understanding the logistics of combining mass manufactured parts with customised, batch manufactured components.

The key output of the project will be the specification of a software tool for designers based on selected, high value-adding product features (the tool itself will not be developed during the PhD though a pilot demonstrator may be feasible).

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in industrial design, engineering design, or a related subject. A relevant master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: Industrial Design, Human Computer Interaction, Design for Manufacture.

All students must also meet the minimum English Language requirements.
