Our MSc Sport Analytics and Technologies programme is designed for individuals who wish to develop a critical understanding of how technology is impacting on sport, in particular the growing sport digital and media sectors.

Sport is embracing digital technologies to improve performance and shake-up tired and redundant business practices, which is why it is a great time to study a sport analytics degree.

On our sport analytics degree, you will investigate cases of data driven decision-making and strategy formulation to outline how statistical analysis and data visualisation is informing sport business trends and solutions.

You will examine how the sport industry is actively embracing digital technologies to improve performance and shake-up tired and redundant business practices, gaining a critical understanding of mobile internet and the latest cloud technologies, with a special emphasis on media cloud applications shifting to mobile Internet platforms.

Together the faculty will introduce you to the latest research and devices driving the sport digital and media environment, and other related areas.

Compulsory modules

An Introduction to Sport Analytics

The module discusses and critiques the theory, development, and application of analytics in sports. Students will learn about the application of analytics in sports for purposes of in-game strategy, player performance, team management, sports operations, fantasy competitions, business development, fan engagement, sponsorship evaluation and other selected topics. Students will be able to critically evaluate the relevant sports literature, interpret sports data, and report to a lay audience.

Sport Business Statistics and Analytics

The aim of this module is to understand the importance of data-driven decision making and strategy formulation, and how statistical analysis and data visualization assist in identifying sport business trends and solutions.

Digital Storytelling for Sports

The aims of this module are to understand the challenges and benefits associated with the translation of raw data insights from large organisational datasets to simple, actionable recommendations presented to non-technical audiences. Using the seven elements of digital storytelling as a conceptual framework, the module will take a big data/decision analytics perspective, discussing the technical aspects of digital storytelling within the context of the organisational roles of a data scientist and data analyst to effectively communicate data insights.

Digital Media Audiences and Markets

The aim of this module is to introduce students to the major issues related to users' engagement with digital media. The module examines the evolution of the interactions of audiences with digital media; characteristics of digital media markets; implications of new digital media platforms on the experience of audiences and the associated organisations. Case studies will also be presented.


Strategic Sports Sponsorship

The aims of this module are to:

  • Introduce students to key concepts in sport sponsorship
  • Develop an understanding of the nature of sport sponsorship.

Sport, Politics, and Diplomacy

The aim of this module is to understand the role that sport plays in political and diplomatic issues at a national and international level. Using contemporary examples from developed, transitioning, developing, and fuel-based economies, the module will explore how sport can be used to positive (e.g., facilitating socio-economic plans) or negative (e.g., whitewashing human rights violations) ends. In doing so, the module aims to promote a critical, evidence-based understanding of the interplay between sport, politics, and diplomacy.

Research and Insight in the Sport Industry

The aims of this module are to:

  • become familiar with a range of research methodologies to better understand the role and adoption of insight and research in the sport business industry.
  • examine the scope and size of the sport business industry globally and the challenges this brings for insight and research.

New Media and Analytics for Sport Business

The aims of this module are to demonstrate how various sport properties are leveraging new media and new technologies, specifically, the Internet and mobile technology. In doing this it will use analytics to study a wide variety of issues affecting the sport industry.

Digital Sport Technologies: Evolution and Application

The aims of this module are to provide a detailed analysis of the evolution and application of digital technologies to sport.

Dissertation

The aims of this module are to give the student the opportunity to study a subject, business problem or research question in depth and to research the issues surrounding the subject or background to the problem.

The module will equip the student with the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to embark on their individual research project and they will be guided through the three options available to them to complete their dissertation:

  • A desk based research project that could be set by an organisation or could be a subject of the student's choice
  • A project that involves collection of primary data from within an organisation or based on lab and/or field experiments
  • A full professional placement within an organisation during which time they will complete a project as part of their role in agreement with the organisation (subject to a suitable placement position being obtained).

Students will achieve a high level of understanding in the subject area and produce a written thesis or project report which will discuss this research in depth and with rigour.

Collaborative Project

The aims of this module are to:

  • Provide students with an opportunity to be exposed to project-based teamwork in diverse settings (understood in this context as involving a range of multidisciplinary, multicultural and demographic elements in differing configurations), aiming to strengthen their cooperative and collaborative working skills and competence, while raising awareness and appreciation of diversity itself.
  • Provide students with hands on experience of identifying, framing and resolving practice oriented and real-world based challenges and problems, using creativity, critical enquiry and appropriate tools to achieve valuable and relevant solutions.
  • Support the development of students' ability to engage in critical enquiry and individual reflection, as well as to apply individual strengths and skills, building on their own educational backgrounds.
  • Provide students with opportunities for networking with stakeholders, organisations and corporations, aiming to enhance the competence and skills needed to connect to relevant parties and build up future professional opportunities.

Data Analytics Tools in Digital Economy

The aims of this module are to:

  • Introduce students to the fundamentals of business intelligence and its application to business decision making in the context of the digital economy
  • Introduce students to the leading data mining methods and their application to real-world problems
  • Provide students with a core understanding of the common algorithms in data mining and its utilisation on data and resources available relevant to business intelligence.
  • Equip students to further explore application areas beyond the module coverage.

Sport Integrity

The aims of this module are to:

  • Examine the nature of sports integrity and the threats to it presented by the manipulation of sporting outcomes and corrupt governance practices in both national and international contexts, including key legal and regulatory areas.
  • Develop a greater awareness of ethical issues in relation to combatting sport integrity issues.
  • Explain the role of the board, and senior management, in providing organisational leadership and implementing cultural change, with particular emphasis on composition and values-based leadership models.
  • Consider the importance of professional conduct, athlete reputation and public confidence in sport.
  • Critically review a range of legal and regulatory issues in sport.
