Doctoral funding for students from Brazil

Ciência sem Fronteiras (Science without Borders) is a scholarship programme funded by the Brazilian Government, which aims to send 101,000 Brazilian students to study at top universities around the world.

Students can apply for funding for PhDs in the following areas:

  • Science
  • Technology
  • Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Creative Industries

Eligibility

The Science without Borders programme offers two routes for postgraduate students to study in the UK. Students currently studying for a PhD in Brazil can apply to spend 6-12 months at a UK university as part of a 'sandwich PhD'. Alternatively students can apply to study for a full PhD at a UK university for 3-4 years.

Eligibility requirements for sandwich PhD applicants

  • Candidates must be Brazilian citizens.
  • Candidates must currently be attending college or university in Brazil.
  • Sandwich PhD candidates must have completed at least one year of their PhD studies. This usually equates to about 30% of the PhD.
  • Candidates must be in good academic standing within their own higher education institution in Brazil.     
  • Candidates must meet the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) minimum English language requirements in order to be eligible for the Tier 4 (General) visa.
  • Candidates must submit official and translated transcripts from an institution recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Higher Education. These must be carried out by an independent translator. English Language requirements

English language requirements may vary depending on the specific subject area and department chosen. For Research Degrees, some Schools/Departments may ask for a higher standard of English language qualifications than the UK Visas and Immigration's (UKVI) minimum requirements due to the nature of work involved.
