Our academic staff

Loughborough is a research-intensive university, and many of our staff are world leaders in their fields. Our Masters courses are based on staff expertise, and you will be taught by staff who are both enthusiastic about their subjects, and are often at the forefront of current research.

The University continues to appoint extra high quality academic staff in all schools/departments to teach at the cutting edge of their discipline, as well as additional staff to support students in their learning and teaching.

Inspiring enterprising students

At Loughborough we aim to provide students with a practical environment to grow and exploit entrepreneurial skills and ideas. We do this by providing all students with an opportunity to engage in enterprise education and activities, and practical services and facilities to support promising students in the realisation of their goals.

A number of the University’s spin-out success stories started out as ideas for projects undertaken as part of student projects or research. The University has a student enterprise manager to help students identify, protect and exploit the commercial potential of their ideas. For further information visit our Student and Graduate Enterprise website.

Facility investment

We recently created new purpose-built teaching facilities for our postgraduate students, including lecture theatres, flexible seminar space, dedicated 24/7 computer facilities and private study space on central campus. We have invested in more state-of-the-art research laboratories for students and more learning and teaching spaces.

We have enhanced our teaching facilities and created a network of informal learning spaces where students can work in groups or socialise. This includes the University Library which now includes a student learning area with café facilities. Our students also benefit from having access to specialist equipment and facilities used in our state-of-the-art research areas. WiFi is available in all major teaching and learning areas, in academic and student support departments, in cafés and the Students’ Union.

Full-time, part-time and distance-learning options

Nearly all of our programmes are available in a full-time or part-time format and many of our modules are also offered as week-long modules for even more flexible study. A number of courses can be studied by either full distance-learning (no compulsory on-campus attendance) or partial distance-learning (requiring short periods of on-campus attendance).

These are highlighted in the programme index. The University also offers a large number of short courses, many tailor-made for businesses. When completed as a week-long module these short courses can be used towards postgraduate qualifications. For further information contact the relevant school/department.

National Student Survey

Since the introduction of the National Student Survey (NSS) in 2005, Loughborough has always been placed amongst the top 5 universities in the UK. The survey itself seeks to measure the satisfaction levels of final year undergraduate students with regard to their degree programme and is therefore regarded as a good indicator of what it is like to study at Loughborough.

Quality Assurance Agency Assessment

The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) works with higher education institutions to define, maintain and improve academic standards and the quality of higher education in the UK.

In the most recent QAA Institutional Audit (2008) the University received the highest possible commendation and was praised for a number of features, including the prioritisation of students in the institutional culture and the thorough approach to the promotion and management of industrial links and placement opportunities to enhance the educational experience of students and the future employability of graduates.
