Assessment

Coursework (including structured observation, documentation and analysis of practical teaching in two secondary schools during the first year), portfolios of evidence and a final research project on a topic related to teaching a specialist subject (Design and Technology, Physical Education or Science).

Entry Qualification*

A degree in a subject related to the specialist teaching subject (Design and Technology, Physical Education or Science). Applicants must also hold qualifications in English language and in mathematics (equivalent to at least GCSE Grade C). More information about entry requirements can be found on the Teacher Education Unit website.

Selection

In accordance with current Government requirements, all applicants must be interviewed before a place can be offered, to assess their suitability for teaching.

It is normally expected that candidates should have recent and relevant experience of working with young people, preferably in a state secondary school setting, shortly before applying for any programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status.

Applicants also have to meet Government requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach, and to have enhanced Criminal Record Bureau clearance to work with children and young people.

Application onto the first year of the programme (PGCE) is made through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR). Full details of the procedure may be found on the GTTR website.
