A degree in a subject related to the specialist teaching subject (Design and Technology, Physical Education or Science). Applicants must also hold qualifications in English language and in mathematics (equivalent to at least GCSE Grade C). More information about entry requirements can be found on the Teacher Education Unit website.
Selection
In accordance with current Government requirements, all applicants must be interviewed before a place can be offered, to assess their suitability for teaching.
It is normally expected that candidates should have recent and relevant experience of working with young people, preferably in a state secondary school setting, shortly before applying for any programme leading to Qualified Teacher Status.
Applicants also have to meet Government requirements for physical and mental fitness to teach, and to have enhanced Criminal Record Bureau clearance to work with children and young people.
Application onto the first year of the programme (PGCE) is made through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR). Full details of the procedure may be found on the GTTR website.
Careers and Further Study
The QTS qualification permits individuals to teach in a secondary school anywhere in the UK and in many other parts of the world. Loughborough graduates are very much in demand and many have gone on to rewarding careers at the highest levels of leadership in the teaching profession.
