Research Methods (European and International Studies) MSc
1 year full-time; 2 years part-time
This programme aims to provide training in research methodology, including both comprehensive training in various qualitative and quantitative methods, and in the application of those methods.
Compulsory Modules
(all modules are compulsory unless specific exemption is given)
Semester 1
- Research Design 1: Principles of Research Strategy and Design
- Qualitative Methods and Analysis 1
- Quantitative Methods and Analysis 1: Basic Approaches
- Effective Management of Research 1: Principles
The above modules are designed to provide basic training in skills and techniques and are provided by the Department of Social Sciences.
Semester 2
- Research Design in European and International Settings
- Qualitative Methods in European and International Settings
- Quantitative Methods in European and International Settings
- Research Management in European and International Settings
These modules provide more advanced and focused training in the specific problems of research conducted in European and international contexts.
Assessment
A combination of essays, reports, individual and group exercises and presentations. Dissertation (compulsory): 12,000-15,000 words.
Entry Qualification*
Upper second class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant social science discipline (Politics, International Relations, European Studies, History, Economics, Human Geography). Applicants without the above are dealt with on a case by case basis.
Selection
All eligible applicants will be interviewed where appropriate and practical, after consideration of their application forms and references.
Careers and Further Study
This programme equips graduates with a range of research skills and techniques particularly suited for the conduct of research in European and international settings. It is recognised by the ESRC as part of the Department’s ‘1+3’ research training, and graduates will also be qualified for entry onto other University ESRC ‘+3’ schemes.

Applicants are expected where eligible to apply for ESRC studentships. They are strongly advised to discuss applications with the Programme Director, at an early stage.
