Department of Physics

The Department
A friendly Department, we aim to provide an academically stimulating and supportive environment for our postgraduate students.
The Department of Physics is a community of approximately 170 undergraduates, 30 postgraduates, 15 full-time academic staff, 7 support staff and several visiting and part-time academic staff.
85% of the Department’s research is of an “international standard”
2008 Research Assessment Exercise
Our research strengths are in the areas of condensed matter and materials, with a good balance between theory and experiment.
The large research student population and wide international links make for a lively environment; one of our Visiting Professors, Alexei Abrikosov, was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physics. The quality of our researchers is recognised internationally and we publish in highly ranked physics journals.
“With it being such a tight Department, every postgraduate knows each other and postgraduate social events are common.”
Andrew Caruana, PhD
Our research-oriented masters programmes are strongly linked to our research activities.
The international dimension to our research gives students the opportunity to work on major projects and visit major laboratories, maximising their career prospects.
Experimental research activities are supported by a team of enthusiastic and highly capable technicians.
