The School

The School comprises the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Mathematics Education Centre.

Awarded 4 out of 5 for ‘overall satisfaction’ in Mathematics and Statistics

National Student Survey 2010

It has over 40 academic staff, reinforced by senior visiting academics, research associates and a large support team.

The postgraduate community numbers about 50, consisting of over 30 research students across a wide range of disciplines and about 20 students on taught programmes.

We have a firm research base with particular strengths in the areas of Applied Mathematics, the interface between Pure and Applied Mathematics and Mathematics Education. We offer a wide variety of courses to our graduate students.

We are a member of a consortium of 14 UK Universities which offer graduate courses via the internet. The School is also home to the only Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Mathematics in the UK.

Students with an interest in pursuing a research degree should contact the relevant research admissions tutor who will put them in touch with an appropriate supervisor.

We provide first class teaching, scoring 22/24 in our External Subject Review, and Loughborough has also performed well in the recent National Student Surveys. Facilities for students on our masters programmes are excellent, with students enjoying a dedicated computer laboratory.

The taught programmes aim to cater for students who do not necessarily have a first degree in single honours mathematics.
