Materials Science and Technology MSc/Diploma/Certificate

MSc: 1 year full-time; 3-4 years part-time Diploma: 2-3 years part-time Certificate: 1-2 years part-time

Materials Science and Technology is a challenging inter disciplinary course offering considerable variety and career opportunities across a wide range of industry sectors.

The course has been designed to meet the requirements of industry and is accredited by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), allowing progression towards professional chartered status.

The programme comprises a mix of semester long and one week modules for full time students and part time students study a mix of one week and distance learning modules. MSc students undertake a major project many of which are sponsored by our industrial partners.

All modules are 15 credits The MSc project is 60 credits. MSc students study 180 credits: 6 core modules plus 2 from the optional module list and the MSc project. PG Diploma students study 120 credits: 6 core modules plus 2 from the optional module list. PG Certificate students study 60 credits: 4 modules from the core module list.

* Alternative modules are only available under certain circumstances by agreement with the programme director.

Entry Qualification

Good lower second class honours degree (55%) or equivalent in science or engineering. For applicants with lesser qualifications, relevant industrial experience will be considered.

Careers and Further Study

Typical careers span many industrial sectors including; aerospace, power generation, automotive, packaging and transport and roles include; technical and project management, R&D, technical support to manufacturing as well as sales and marketing.

Many of our best masters students continue their studies with us, joining our thriving community of  around 75 PhD students engaged in materials projects of real-world significance.

Selection

All UK students are normally interviewed before an offer is made. International students are usually accepted on the basis of their degree performance and prior experience, and on strong recommendation from academics who have established links with the Department.

Assessment Modules

Combinations of written examination and set exercises or laboratory reports. Project: (60 credits); dissertation, literature review and oral presentation. The research project, often industrially sponsored, is carried out in the Department or the student’s place of work.

Bursaries and Scholarships

Bursaries are available for both UK/EU and international students and scholarships are available for good overseas applicants.
