Since its creation in 1972, the Department has established a national and international reputation.
It is in purpose-built accommodation, equipped with teaching and office space as well as laboratories for computer-based research and teaching.
There are currently 20 academic staff in the Department. A number of external professors, lecturers and contract research staff also play a full part in our research and teaching activities. A team of support staff and laboratory assistants complete the Department’s staff complement.
The Department provides programmes for an intake of approximately 60 postgraduate students (taught) and 110 undergraduate students each year.
The Department has a thriving research student community comprising around 45 students, with home-based and overseas students; most of the students study full-time, with a few students combining work with part-time study.
The Department contributes to many areas of research in information science. 85% of our research was judged to be of an “international standard” in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise.
Our interests range from health and social informatics, electronic publishing; legal, ethical and policy issues; to library and knowledge management.
