The Department

Part of the newly formed School of Business and Economics, the former Department of Economics has been an international leader in Economics, Banking and Finance for more than two decades.

Our academic staff comprise world-renowned established researchers and energetic young researchers at the leading edge of their fields.

95% of the School's Economics research is of an international standard

2008 Research Assessment Exercise

Our Masters programmes not only provide training in theory and quantitative methods for doctoral research, but also a practical introduction to the world of economics and finance.

Our MScs offer specific pathways to Banking and Finance, Financial Markets and International Banking and incorporate research training in Economics (the MSc in Economics and Finance research training is ESRC recognised).

They comprise a high degree of vocational relevance and include the optional module Financial Market Trading featuring simulated screen trading of financial instruments.

“I’ve learnt from leading Economics Professors, whose creative teaching and passion for the subject have helped me to excel and develop important skills for my career.”

James Carroll, MSc, Economics

Our MA programmes provide generalised vocational training for occupations in banking, central banking and the financial services sectors of industry and Government.

The Diploma in Economics allows non-Economics graduates to convert their degrees to an Economics degree, which may then qualify them for entry onto our MScs.

Our PhD students are integral to the School and are expected to give a seminar presentation of ongoing research at least once a year.

The School endeavours to give financial support for both UK and overseas conferences.
