The School

The results of the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), published in December 2008, have confirmed Loughborough as one of the country’s leading research universities:

• Ranked 5th in UK for Built Environment and 7th for Civil Engineering in the 2008 RAE
• 25% of the School’s Built Environment research is classed as ‘world-leading’ (rated the maximum 4*)
• 95% of the School’s Built Environment research and 90% of the School’s Civil Engineering research is of an “international standard” (rated 2*, 3* or 4*)

The School was ranked 1st in the National Student Survey for three consecutive years in two subject areas and was awarded an excellent score for the quality of its teaching in the Government’s External Subject Review.

Research and teaching includes all the main construction and transport disciplines, providing a rich diversity of perspectives. Interdisciplinary and collaborative work is a key strength, and encouraged at all levels.

The School has over 60 academic staff, 40 technical and clerical support staff, and a growing research community of over 240 research students and researchers (Research Fellows, Associates, Assistants and Doctoral Students).

It offers a wide range of programmes accredited by professional institutions. These programmes are aligned to the needs of industry and enjoy a high level of sponsorship. Our record of graduate employment is second to none. New research grants and contract income has grown substantially over recent years.

The School has a well established record for research excellence and attracts income from the EPSRC, Government departments, Charities and the European Union. It recently achieved an 8.2% market share, making it first in the UK in terms of research income in its sector.
