“The department is very friendly. All the lecturers are easy to approach and keen to share their knowledge with you. They are very conscious of the needs of new PhD students and work very hard to get you started.”
Mark McCall, PhD
Research Proposal
Applicants are expected to provide a one page research proposal (about 500 words) describing the type of work that they wish to carry out for their PhD research. Ideally this should be aligned with the research interests of an academic member of staff in the Department.
Applicants may approach academic members of staff directly (e.g. by email) and discuss the proposal prior to submission. The research should explain the motivation for the proposed work, as well as the general methods that could be employed, for example using numerical, theoretical or experimental methods.
Departmental Support for Research Students
All research students are provided with:
- access to a shared research student office
- photocopying and inter-library loan facilities
- a supervisory team (comprising usually a lead academic member of staff with support from a second academic colleague) both of whom will have complementary expertise in the selected research area.
All research students attend the seminar programme, to which external speakers are invited. The Department also runs a specific PGR seminar programme during term time where PhD students present their research work.
PGR students are invited to present their research findings at the beginning of their second and at the end of their third year of research. Each student makes a short presentation, followed by a question and answer session.
Presenting at seminars is an excellent way to gain confidence and get feedback on the work the student has done. PGR students attend training courses as part of their skills development throughout their PhD to support their research. The Academic Supervisors together with the Graduate School provide guidance regarding tailoring skills development to meet the needs of each student.
