Student Summer Exchange a success
November 15, 2011
Eddie Obropta, a student from America, has made full use of his Santander Universities funded exchange programme this summer.
Studying Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in America, Eddie spent 12 weeks at Loughborough University on a summer placement at the Sports Technology Institute (STI).
Eddie’s placement was partly funded by a Santander Universities exchange programme which facilitates international relationships between universities.
Supervised by STI Director, Prof Mike Caine, Eddie was able to work on numerous projects during his time at Loughborough. These included a writing software code for 3D motion analysis that tracks human movements, developing an algorithm for predicting compression levels in technical sports garments and assisting with the development of a novel fitness concept.
Commenting on the experience, Eddie said:
"I had an astounding summer. I learned so much at the Sports Technology Institute and I enjoyed all of my days there. I learned about the business, sports, product design, lab techniques, and even consultancy. My work was exciting because the sports industry is so close to market and I got to work on a little bit of everything. I was able to apply knowledge that I learned in my classes that I thought would be unrelated to sports especially since my major is Aeronautical Engineering.
“This summer I saw a tremendous amount of the UK and Europe. I was nervous traveling abroad alone, but the guys at Sports Tech were exceptionally friendly and helpful. I got to play so many sports with them and really felt I was a part of the community while being immersed in British culture. I can now certainly say I have some great friends in the UK."
